I love to shop but ever since becoming a parent, I have moved most of my shopping to online stores to save me the hassle of dragging the kids to a store. That said, I am also a fan of hand-me-downs, thrift store shopping and second-hand goods. We come from a huge family and much of the hand-me-down clothes and baby toys that the Cheesecake kids get from their older cousins are still in mint condition. ThredUp combines my love for second-hand goods with my love for online shopping. I love that I can find second-hand clothes for myself and my kids in the same place and I know that they are quality finds for great prices.
They sell Halloween costumes too!
For the most part, the clothes we get look just like new or are in excellent used condition. Some of my favorite brands to shop for are Anthropologie, J. Crew, Kate Spade, Splendid, Old Navy/Gap Kids and Baby, Crew Cuts, and Gymboree because the clothes hold up well. I’ve been shopping for us on ThreadUp for about two years now and I learned my share of tricks for effective shopping on the site.
Shopping Tips & Secrets
- Save your range of sizes and favorite brands to make finding clothes easier.
- Items in your shopping cart expire after a day so if there is something that you are really considering buying, keep tabs on it or someone else might snatch it up when your cart expires and refreshes.
- With that in mind, if an item you want is no longer in your cart check out the “Recently Removed Items” section to pick it back up. If it’s not there you might have to search for the item again. Sometimes ThredUp will email you that your cart is about to expire so if you still aren’t sure you want to buy something, you can click on the links in the email to go to the item and add it back to your cart.
- If you spend $79 you get free shipping for that purchase, but if you spend $150+ (cumulatively in a month) you get free shipping for the next whole month!
- If you have the ThredUp app on your phone they will message you special discount codes for your purchase.
- It’s free returns if you choose to get ThredUp credit rather than the original payment reimbursement. I will usually return items (with free return shipping!), accumulate ThredUp credit and then use it on my next purchase.
- There’s a section for clothes that are still new with tags as well as a section for Designer items. They have handbags from Kate Space, Coach and Dooney & Burke, just to name a few.
- You can sell your gently used clothes on their website by ordering a Clean Out Kit. The money that you make from the kit can be used to shop on their site or you can cash out your balance. (There is a $6.99 shipping and handling fee for the kit that will be taken out of the amount that you earn from the kit.) I have sent in two kits of kids and women’s clothing and used the credit I received from the bag for purchases on their site.
Looking sharp wearing ThredUp-brought clothes with the exception of their shoes!

I love thredup for myself and my kids. Honestly, I thought my days of designer bags would have to wait until all of my purses had dinosaurs, goldfish crackers and applesauce packets, but buying a bag on thredup means I don’t care as much if it gets a little dirty.

@Mrs. Cereal: Totally agree!
@Megatherium: Buying designer handbags second hand definitely makes it easier to accept the cheerios and applesauce packets!
Angela: here’s my referral code again, just in case!

Just curious – how much did you get for your clothes that you sent in and did it seem like a low-ball amount? I ordered the clean out kit earlier this week and debating if it’s worth it!

@skipra: I’ve sent in two very full bags: one being mainly toddler/kids clothes and the other being a mix of women’s clothes and kids. I think I got $30 per bag and most of the clothes were in NWT or EUC. Sometimes it can be hit or miss. But one recommendation I have is, if you send a bag in don’t have high expectations for it. Send clothes in that you feel are E/GUC, but if they don’t get you any money you won’t be disappointed.
