It started in the very early days for us. I remember sitting there with a crying 1 month old, showing my Mom her gums and saying, “look at how white they are, there must be a tooth right there!” I mean why else would a little one be so upset and so crabby; it has to be the teeth!

She is nine months old now. 42 weeks to be exact, and she just cut her first bottom teeth this week. I am not saying that it was never the teeth. I mean for the last week or so, it was the teeth. There was more drooling then usual (I was not sure that it was even possible for her to drool more), and new irritability we had not seen before. All those other times… well I am not sure what those were. Wonder weeks? Maybe. Growth spurts? Possibly. Honestly, I have no idea.

I do, however, think that if it makes us as mommies feel better to think that every possible grumpy moment our children have is caused by teething, then so be it. I like reasons; they make me feel better and remind me there is an end in sight. That is why every time a new mom says to me “oh my little one was crying for hours last night because there is a tooth right about to break through,” I smile understandingly and acknowledge just how tough teething can be on a little one. I mean you never know — tomorrow could be the day — and who I am I to give the bad news that it could be months before that little sharp jagged jerky tooth might actually appear.

Teething is no joke over here in the Tea household. Here are some of our favourites to help get through the rough days.

1. Chew beads – I was extremely skeptical of these because I was afraid that Little Tea Cup would chew all my jewelry if she was able to chew on these. Well she does try to chew my jewelry, but she did this long before she had the chew beads. She often holds these when she sits in her highchair while we are having dinner and gnaws away happily. I love that they are easy to clean and nice and soft for her gums.

2. Nuby Icybite Hard/Soft Teething Keys – A favourite in our house. These rotate between the fridge, Little Tea Cup’s mouth and the sink for cleaning all day every day!

3. Brush-Baby Teether Brush  – This little toothbrush is our ABSOLUTE favourite! I attach it to some rings and little lady chews away on this happily. It is soft but has little bristles that massage her gums. (This one from Amazon looks similar.)

4. Hyland’s Homeopathic Baby Teething Tablets – I do not think that these are a miracle cure, although many people do. I have given these to Little Tea Cup on occasion and they do seem to take the edge off.

5.  Infants’ Acetaminophen – When in absolute need, my doctor has said some Tylenol at bed time will give Little Tea Cup, her growing teeth and her tired parents some much needed relief.

6. Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether – I believe this is on every list out there but we do like Sophie over here. I only wish you could attach her to something to avoid her landing on the ground all the time.

7. Sassy Teething Feeder – I put anything chilled in here and let her chew away to sooth those sore gums.

8. Baltic Amber Teething Necklace – I am not sure if this helps with pain but it certainly has helped slow down the drool around here.
