It started in the very early days for us. I remember sitting there with a crying 1 month old, showing my Mom her gums and saying, “look at how white they are, there must be a tooth right there!” I mean why else would a little one be so upset and so crabby; it has to be the teeth!
She is nine months old now. 42 weeks to be exact, and she just cut her first bottom teeth this week. I am not saying that it was never the teeth. I mean for the last week or so, it was the teeth. There was more drooling then usual (I was not sure that it was even possible for her to drool more), and new irritability we had not seen before. All those other times… well I am not sure what those were. Wonder weeks? Maybe. Growth spurts? Possibly. Honestly, I have no idea.
I do, however, think that if it makes us as mommies feel better to think that every possible grumpy moment our children have is caused by teething, then so be it. I like reasons; they make me feel better and remind me there is an end in sight. That is why every time a new mom says to me “oh my little one was crying for hours last night because there is a tooth right about to break through,” I smile understandingly and acknowledge just how tough teething can be on a little one. I mean you never know — tomorrow could be the day — and who I am I to give the bad news that it could be months before that little sharp jagged jerky tooth might actually appear.
Teething is no joke over here in the Tea household. Here are some of our favourites to help get through the rough days.
1. Chew beads – I was extremely skeptical of these because I was afraid that Little Tea Cup would chew all my jewelry if she was able to chew on these. Well she does try to chew my jewelry, but she did this long before she had the chew beads. She often holds these when she sits in her highchair while we are having dinner and gnaws away happily. I love that they are easy to clean and nice and soft for her gums.
2. Nuby Icybite Hard/Soft Teething Keys – A favourite in our house. These rotate between the fridge, Little Tea Cup’s mouth and the sink for cleaning all day every day!
3. Brush-Baby Teether Brush – This little toothbrush is our ABSOLUTE favourite! I attach it to some rings and little lady chews away on this happily. It is soft but has little bristles that massage her gums. (This one from Amazon looks similar.)
4. Hyland’s Homeopathic Baby Teething Tablets – I do not think that these are a miracle cure, although many people do. I have given these to Little Tea Cup on occasion and they do seem to take the edge off.
5. Infants’ Acetaminophen – When in absolute need, my doctor has said some Tylenol at bed time will give Little Tea Cup, her growing teeth and her tired parents some much needed relief.
6. Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether – I believe this is on every list out there but we do like Sophie over here. I only wish you could attach her to something to avoid her landing on the ground all the time.
7. Sassy Teething Feeder – I put anything chilled in here and let her chew away to sooth those sore gums.
8. Baltic Amber Teething Necklace – I am not sure if this helps with pain but it certainly has helped slow down the drool around here.

Teething is totally a process so it could very well be “teething” a long time before they erupt! We actually had a case of the disappearing tooth with P’s first tooth! It came almost totally through at a few months old & then the next day was GONE until they came through at like 8 months!
As for treating teething, our go-to is Boiron Camilia teething medicine b/c it’s totally all natural (no questionable ingredients), comes in easy to administer ampules, & in the last 14 months I’ve only had to give a 2nd dose a handful of times! Seriously love this stuff!

This is an on-going joke in our house! Teething was our excuse for everthing for about 10 months.

My LO doesn’t seem to like to put much in his mouth (this includes food so it isn’t as joyous as it sounds) he is finally getting into the chilled Sassy shapes but really anything hard like the Sassy links to keep toys attached to a carseat work for him.
For the older one he loves the IKEA plastic spoons, we put them in the freezer and he likes to pick out his color and gnaws on them. The end with the round nubs seem to be his favorite part.

The teether brush has been a life saver in our house. LO takes that thing everywhere with her.

we finally ordered an amber teething necklace and it’s like it turned the drool tap off. amazing. I think he’s working on cutting one of his top teeth at the moment

As for Sophie, we use a pacifier clip and put it around her neck. Yes, it looks like we’re hanging the giraffe but it doesn’t fall on the ground!

Teething definitely seems to be the go-to excuse for a cranky, non-sleeping baby!! I think our little guy has handled teething well (unlike many other things in his short little life), so I am super thankful for that.
He has worn an amber necklace since he was 2 months old. Everyone asks if it works and I tell them that we don’t test the theory because we never take it off. We will use Tylenol or Camilia if he’s super cranky, but it’s rare.
P.S. He has 8 teeth, 2 molars and a bunch of white spots where other teeth may be on their way!

@runsyellowlites: oh yes a process indeed
I have yet to try Boiron Camilia teething medicine but I have heard wonderful things. Maybe when our next little ones decide to make their presence know I will give it a shot!
@mrs. tictactoe: Ha! Glad to know we are not the only ones!
@Mrs.Maven: Little Tea Cup loves a good spoon too…I always laugh when I buy her something fancy and new and she goes right for the regular old stuff!
@plantains: Ours looks so beat up at this point for that exact reason ha ha! I must buy a back up!
@Penny Lane: Little Tea Cup sadly just discovered hers and now tries to chew on it. I am headed to the store to try to find a shorter one later today as she was soaked after not having it on!
@MUI831: Great idea! Must do this! Thank you
@Sammyfab: I am so glad that it hasn’t bothered your little guy very much. I must say after this post went up, Little Tea Cup got three more teeth in rapid succession and it did not seem to phase her. Strange but I am so thankful! Fingers are crossed this continues for both of us!

You have quite the thorough arsenal for teething! I really can’t think of anything to add!
The teething tablets, Tylenol, on occasion, at night, and anything hard (including table legs) seem to give our LO the most relief during her teething.

@LaurelMae: Little tea cup loves a good table leg too

So far he just comes to me for hugs randomly during the day time. He has four teeth at 14 months and I can tell that more are coming in soon b/c he’s drooling like CRAZY all of a sudden. Soaking through bib after bib. Drooling on everything he plays with. The bib helps but still. I still step in drool wherever I go and we have a good size house! He hardly sticks anything in his mouth either.

I made a “leash” for Sophie out of ribbon and Velcro. Took about 2 mins to make! Check on Pinterest! Best thing ever! No more dropsies!

I have actually found a new “excuse” for everything for my baby’s fussy periods. It’s called Wonder Weeks. I keep meaning to read the book but the gist of it is that babies go through leaps when they are about to make a developmental breakthrough. It can be anything from starting to smile to grasping toys, to rolling over, sitting up, crawling, etc. But studies have shown that for a week or so before that big leap, babies are often very fussy, clingy, have trouble sleeping well, etc. I noticed every time one of these periods happens with my son, he does something new within a few days after it stops! No more blaming teething!
