When Little Piñata started chewing on his crib rail, I knew we needed to put up a teething guard. I didn’t want to pay $20 for one without being sure that it would fit his crib, so I decided to make one myself.
The best thing about making your own is that it’s cheap! You should only need one yard of any color fleece you choose, which should only be about $5. I bought 2 yards since I’m new to DIY projects and wanted to be sure I didn’t have to go back to the store if I made a mistake. Other than the fleece, you’ll need scissors and a ruler or measuring tape.
Steps:
1. Measure the length of the crib rail you want to cover. The directions I found said to cut the fleece strip 10″ wide, but I found it more helpful to drape the total length of the fabric over the crib rail and then cut it based on how much room I would need to tie the knots between the slats.
Cutting slits in between the slats
2. I then draped the fleece over the rail and cut little slits on either side of the crib slats. Then I tied a double knot between the slats.
Tying the knot between the slats
3. This left fabric hanging down where the wood slats were, but I just tucked them back up under the fleece and you would never know!
4. That’s it! Other than the time at the store, I think I only spent about 15 minutes total doing this and I covered 3 sides of the crib. It works great! Little Piñata is no longer tempted to chew on his crib and that will hopefully keep it in better condition for longer.

SO smart. We bought a really cheap crib, but had we had a nice one, this would have been so good to know! The rails of ours is totally covered in bite marks and tooth scrapes.

I made a custom one to match his bedding when he started to gnaw on his crib. And then the stopped gnawing…I should have just gone for the easy route! Especially when yours looks so good!

Thanks all! I have to admit that a friend sent me the “instructions” and they were so easy I decided to share it with others! It’s nice that you can “hide” the messy cut lines so that it looks nice even if it was not a perfect job in the first place.

Such funny timing – I just did this last week! I wasn’t going to worry about it when it was just little gnaw marks, but she started to get big huge splinters off! The fleece worked like a charm
