In the Piñata home, we try to do as much naturally as we possibly can. This started when my sister-in-law told me about the dangers of parabens in cosmetics a few years ago. I use A LOT of body lotions, and it turned out all the lotions I used were loaded with yucky chemicals, so I switched over to a brand that was paraben-free. Then when dealing with infertility, we read about even more body and cosmetic products with nasty chemicals, so I have tried to do as much naturally as I can while still saving money. I know many use organic baby and beauty products, but these tips will also save you money!
Castile Soap // Coconut Oil // Apple Cider Vinegar
1. Foaming Face and Hand Soap
Ingredients:
Castille Soap
Warm Water
Foaming Soap Dispenser
We do the same thing that Mrs. Bee mentioned here! We use Dr. Bronner’s Castille soap and use foaming soap dispensers to make both hand and face soap. Just be sure to use a mild scent if you’re going to wash your face with it. I once used Peppermint and it really burned my eyes!
All you do is add 1/4 a cup of the castille soap to a 8oz foaming soap dispenser and slowly add warm water until the container is full. And you have foaming soap that works for both your face and hands! I’ve started to buy my soap by the gallon and just keep refilling our containers for months.
2. Facial Toner
Ingredients:
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (has to say “with the Mother” on it)
Water
I love this find because it’s inexpensive and you just can’t get any more organic and basic than Pure Apple Cider Vinegar! I love the BRAGG brand, but as long as you find one “with the mother” you’ll be great. I make my toner with 1 part ACV to 2 parts water, but to start off you might want to have 1 part ACV to 3 parts water. Your face will definitely smell stinky at first, but I’ve been doing this for about 2 years now and never notice the smell anymore if I use a small amount. It really seems to even out the oily/dry balance of my face and it is so refreshing!
3. Face/Skin Moisturizer, Hand Lotion & Eye Make-Up Remover
Ingredient:
Organic, Virgin Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is hands-down the #1 cooking AND body product in our home! We LOVE it! It’s full of good fats for cooking and sautéing, but we love it even more as a moisturizer. We use it every night to moisturize Little Piñata’s skin and hair! I also love it as a facial lotion before bed and it’s the most amazing make-up remover ever! I just dab a bit on my eyes and wipe it off with a square of toilet paper and it’s all gone. And it’s also a good fertility friendly (cough, cough) lubricant. If you’re interested in that by any chance.
We buy the Trader Joe’s brand because it’s just $5.99 for 16 oz in the store, which is the least expensive brand I’ve found.
So, there are my three favorite natural and cheap body products. What are other inexpensive and natural beauty products that you use?

I got on the coconut oil craze after reading Mrs Owls post about it. I bought it for Drake & my dry skin. I use it daily but I still need it daily. I thought I read that because its such a good moisturizer daily application isnt always needed or am I wrong? I was just hoping for something to last a while since my dry legs are so yucky looking also you put it in baby hair? Juliet has one scaly piece of cradle cap still but Im so hesitant about putting oil on her head with all her hair Im worried it wont wash of easy Am I totally going about everything wrong?

These are great tips! I am definitely going to try the castille soap and apple cider vinegar. I don’t cook that much with coconut oil, but we did use it as a personal lubricant after 6 weeks after the baby was born works wonders!. And was great with cradle cap too, just dab a small amount, let sit for a few minutes and gently rub/wipe off the cradle cap!

Love these tips! I definitely want to try the apple cider vinegar toner

I use all of the above ingredients. I don’t use ACV as a toner but it’s great for removing build-up from your hair–no need for clarifying shampoo if you’ve got ACV in the house, just dilute with water, spritz, and rinse (you can leave it on for longer for a deeper clean).
We used olive and coconut for LO’s cradle cap. We use pure Shea butter on her skin. During the warmer weather we use coconut oil in our hair (well, mine and LOs, DH has none) but since it’s colder we are using a mix of olive, jojoba, and tea tree oil.
I also make my own exfoliant with brown sugar, honey, olive oil, and lemon juice.

We use coconut oil here. I’ll check out the other uses.

This is so cool – I haven’t tried any of these but may experiment with the coconut oil. Mr. C hates all things coconut but I have heard that the oil is only mildly coconut smelling, right?

@Mrs. Confetti: I don’t like coconut either but I can stand the smell of coconut oil.

Everytime I use coconut oil in my cooking, I feel like I should be on a beach
Love the scent.

We love Dr. Bronners. We also use coconut oil.

@Mrs. Chocolate: I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong! I never heard that you would need to use it less and less with this, so I don’t know about that.
And we used coconut oil for cradle cap and it worked great! I rubbed it on little P’s head and let it sit for awhile, maybe 10-20 minutes. Then I brushed it with a super soft baby brush to loosen up the skin and then used a comb to get all that “dandruff” out. His cradle cap was BAD, but after that one coconut oil treatment it never came back.
Also, I had a random thought about your dry legs. Do you think you drink enough water each day? It may be totally unrelated, but I think I’ve heard that correlation before.

@mrsjazz: wow! Both your exfoliant and hair moisturizers sound awesome! I’m just now getting into essential oils as well and never thought to use them in LOs hair! And I’d love that exfoliant recipe!

@Mrs. Confetti: I agree with @mrsjazz. I actually hate coconut in cooking and feel like coconut shavings ruin perfectly delicious desserts.
but I LOVE coconut oil, it’s smell and the light flavor it adds to our dishes.

Ooh… I love reading about other people’s natural beauty routines! Thanks for this post!
Here are my three favorite natural beauty products:
1. Honey. I wash my face with pure honey, and it’s been great for my sensitive skin. You just have to be careful about keeping it away from your hairline if you’re not in the shower, or you’ll end up with crunchy honey crystals in your hair. I finish with a glycolic acid toner by Sanitas, which takes off any lasting bits of make-up.
2. Pure aloe gel. I use aloe gel in lieu of hair gel or mousse. It has great staying power, a little goes a long way, and it doesn’t make my scalp itch like chemical hair products. It’s also great to have on hand for injuries, burns, bug bites, etc.
3. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. I know this sounds totally hokey, but this product is just pure calcium bentonite clay. It’s been used for its healing properties for centuries, and I can attest that it is awesome! It’s made my complexion much smoother and more even toned. I mix it with apple cider vinegar and use it once a week. It’s cheap and Amazon reviewers love it! http://www.amazon.com/Aztec-Secret-Indian-Healing-Cleansing/dp/B0014P8L9W

i gotta try the coconut oil as eyemakeup remover. much more inexpensive than my lancome brand… hope it works as well though!

@mrsjazz: I’ve done the same with brown sugar and grapeseed oil, but no lemon juice.
I have to find a nice big plastic jar to keep in the shower, then I’ll make up a new batch.

I had no idea that coconut oil works as eye makeup remover!!! I will definitely be giving that a whirl!

I have been using coconut oil in DD’s hair and i really helps make her thin curls smoother. We also use it for diaper rashes and it works wonders!! We were using it for a moisturizer, but it wasn’t cutting it with DD’s really dry/mild eczema skin.

My mom swears by vinegar for her face! She uses plain old white vinegar.

I love all the coconut oil uses. I want to try that soap too.

I love coconut oil but I don’t use it on my face because it has a fairly high comodgenic rating. I’m afraid I’d break out like crazy, do other people not have this problem? Maybe I’m the only one who still breaks out like a teenager.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
@mrsjazz: I was thinking of adding jojoba to LO’s routine, how are you liking it?
@Mrs. Chocolate: coconut oil is very light and it is moisturising as it actually penetrates the hair shaft making it a great choice for LO’s hair.

Good tips!

@plantains: I like it. It still keeps her hair feeling soft. I stopped using coconut oil since I read something about how it’s better to use lighter oils in the winter–any oil that hardens in the cooler temperatures can also do that in the hair.

@sometimesshesings: These tips sound awesome! I think I’ll try some of them too. I NEVER would have thought of washing my face with honey!
blogger / pear / 1563 posts
@Mrs. Bee: I think you’ll find it works BETTER!
Let me know what you think.
blogger / pear / 1563 posts
@jetsa: You know, I have actually heard from a couple of people that it helped their acne! Have you ever tried tea tree oil as a blemish remover? When I get a zit or pimple I’ve been putting tea tree oil on it and it helps so quickly!

I’ve been looking for womething to try on the boys because they are getting so dry and scaly but all the lotions we try give them a little rash, even the fragrance-free ones. I’m going to try coconut oil! Thanks for the tip!

I swear by coconut oil for EVERYTHING. worked for Baby Marker’s cradle cap as well

Nice. This is a post after my own heart. We actually tried using lard as a moisturizer on Lorelei last winter. It worked really well, but she developed an, um, “special” relationship with the dog because of it, so we chose to discontinue. Unfortunately he is also a fan of coconut oil. I love keeping products around that have so many good uses!

@Mrs. Pinata: I’m going to try using apple cider vinegar instead of my glycolic toner. The one I buy is a bit pricey, so it will be great if the ACV works just as well!

Great issue to bring awareness to….especially important for women who are trying to get pregnant, women who are pregnant and babies/children!
I am a naturopathic doctor, with a special interest in fertility. I have written this blog post on the subject of environmental chemicals and how they effect fertility.
