I’m pretty sure if I have to listen to any more variations of the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” I will lose it! There’s the traditional version, the jazzy version, the rock version. Enough is enough!
But, we like having music on for Miss H throughout the day. It’s just, well, some kids music can be pretty bad/annoying/obnoxoius/repetitive. Especially if you’re listening to a Pandora kids’ station – over the course of an hour or two you will hear multiple versions of the same song. A song you didn’t even like the first time around!
Which brings me to the Okee Dokee Brothers. Their music is folky, upbeat, and better yet – parent and kid friendly. I can actually sit and enjoy the music and the lyrics while also knowing that everything is a-ok for Miss H’s ears. Their most recent album (the one we have) Can You Canoe? won the 2013 Grammy for Best Children’s Album of the Year.

Mr. and Mrs. Sippy
Mister and Missus Sippy
Got married in the fall
Left the church that very same day
For their honeymoon in St. Paul
M-I-Double S-I-double S-I-P-P-I
M-I-Double S-I-double S-I-P-P-I
Mister and Missus Sippy
They rambled and they roamed
But when got down to St. Louie
They made themselves a home
Mister and Missus Sippy
Were traveling south bound
Had some kids and raised ‘em
In good old Memphis Town
Mister and Missus Sippy
Had no place left to go
So they drifted down past New Orleans
To the gulf of Mexico
You can’t find me 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3
4 Mississippi, 5 Mississippi, Olly Olly Oxen Free!
Sing it backwards I-P-P-I-Double S-I-Double S-I-M
Sing it forwards
Rosita
Rosita the skeeta
Aint no skeeta sweeta
But she’s a man eata
Rosita the Bug
I tried keeping her away with bug spray galore
But she kept on coming back for more
So now I’m covered from head to toe
With kisses from a mosquito (named)
Do I itch the scratch or scratch the itch
I never can tell which one’s which
But I think I’d be doin fine
If I could take a bath in calamine (cuz)
Fly around my pretty little miss fly around my daisy
Fly around my pretty little miss ya almost drive me crazy
Do you have some favorite children’s music that is fun for both you and your LO?

I have this album downloaded and listened to it a bit a while ago when D was a wee little thing, but he could not have cared less. Now that he’s bopping along to music more, I should put this on – he loves the “banjo” on his musical table, so I bet he’d love this! We like the Barenaked Ladies kids’ album, Snacktime!

It’s so good to get recommendations on good kids music! You’re right, so much is cheesy! We tend to just listen to “child friendly” adult music, but I’ll have to check out this CD now.

I love an album called Late Last Night by Joe Scruggs. My mom played it for us all the time when I was growing up and now I love playing it for my daughter.

My husband is all over finding kids songs that he can tolerate. We were at a music festival this summer and the Verve Pipe (remember them?) was on the lineup. Apparently they do kids songs now and I had no idea.
Maybe I’ll use this cd when/if I need to surprise him to tell him we’re expecting. Thanks!

We saw the Okie Dokie brothers live about a year ago. They are awesome. So fun. Ellie got to talk to them afterward and they were just so kind to her. You should also check out Johnette Downing, if you haven’t yet. We adore her stuff.

We stay far away from kiddo music in this house, leaning towards adult music with kid friendly lyrics… but our friends got us hooked on this group a few months ago. I think it’s the *only* kid tunes we have in the house!

Sounds great! I need to download it.
