I shared previously that I will be attempting to plan activities for Little Lion this year based on a monthly theme. March’s theme is Farm Animals. These activities are intended for Little Lion, who will be 12 months old, but they could easily be adapted for an older or younger child. Please consider your child’s current development when planning activities for him/her since you know your baby best.
Discovery Baskets
Discovery Baskets are simply baskets of items that have a common theme. They provide an opportunity for baby to investigate, and also for conversation about individual items. They also allow babies to start seeing patterns and categories (pre-math skills).
Most of the items in my baskets were found around the house. Make sure items put in your baskets are safe for your child. Some can be used during independent play, but sometimes you may want to include items even though they require close supervision. Use your best judgment, and always err on the side of caution. For more information about creating your own treasure baskets, you can check out How We Montessori!
Animal Basket
This basket will require a special purchase since we don’t have any animal toys yet for Little Lion. But, I know they will be put to good use for more than just this month, so I decided it was worth the investment. I really like this set, since they are large and realistic looking.
Art/Sensory Activities
1. Pig in the Mud – I love this! Brown finger paint (you can use this edible one!) painting on a pig cutout.
2. Sticky Sheep – So fun, and much easier than trying to use glue!
3. Painting with Animals – For this activity we will use the animals from our discovery basket.
4. Play Dough with Animal Cookie Cutters – You can use store bought dough or you can make your own. My favorite recipe is really simple. Mix two parts flour with one part salt and one part water. You can also add a Kool-Aid packet for color/scent if you want (this is a fun variation).
5. Play in the mud – Dress in clothes that can get dirty and find some mud! Squish it between your fingers, smell it, stomp in it. Try not to eat it.
Songs/Videos –
2. Baby Einstein: A Day on the Farm – (This video is 30 minutes long. Since LL is still too young for much screen time, we probably won’t watch this one, but since I found it in my searching for songs I thought I would share!)
3. A Fresh Breath of Farm Air (Fresh Prince Parody) – These guys have an entire series of parody songs about their farm. Hilarious! Plus they show video of the farm in action, so it is a win-win for LL and me.
Outdoor Adventures
1. Plant a Garden – March is the month we will be planting our backyard garden. Use this as an opportunity to talk about plants that grow on a farm. Little Lion wont be old enough to really understand, but he can help me water the plants and rake the soil. Older toddlers may get into this even more.
2. Visit a Farm – This may take a little bit of planning, but I would like to take LL to visit a farm this month so that he can see animals in real life. I did a quick Google search and discovered this one that we can visit that isn’t too far away.

Such cute ideas! I can’t wait to take Aidan to see animals at a farm. Actually, it might be more for me than for him.

I’m really impressed with all the plans you come up with each month! It’s hard to keep the teacher out of the mom isn’t it. Which is a good thing.

Those farm animals are so great. They’re pricey but they’re really a great product. Right now my husband may get more use out of them than our toddler does, but they’re great. Good luck with play dough, our 20 month old still doesn’t want to play with it, she thinks it’s food.

@Mrs. Pinata: Totally not possible. Once a teacher, always a teacher

@mediagirl: They are pricey…we haven’t got them yet…I keep hoping I will find a used set…but no luck so far. Going to have to bite the bullet. But they will be used for such a long time, I feel like it is worth it.
LL still eats the play doh too…but it’s all a sensory experience anyway so I don’t mind so much. That’s why I make my own…I like knowing it is actually MADE of food I try to show him other ways to play, but once it ends up gooey we throw it out and find something else to do.

@Mrs. Lion: I’m trying to think of a holiday that is coming up and all I can think of is Easter. An Easter gift, maybe? Take them out of the box and put them in LL’s basket?

@mediagirl: haha is it crazy that I have a ridiculously hard time not just giving him things that are meant to be gifts when I buy them? He is too young to know the difference…right?

ETA – I think St. Patrick’s Day is first. “Here you go LL, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Some day you will drink green beer and go wild, but for now here’s some farm animals! Let’s use them to paint with green fingerpaint!” haha

@Mrs. Lion: I’m the same exact way. Her (eh hem) “Valentine’s Day” gift arrived on a Monday. She got it Tuesday even though Vday wasn’t until Friday. Yes! Use the animals to see what their various footprints look like with fingerpaint!

@mediagirl: Is it terrible that I am the one who ends up doing the activities while LL stares at me with a look like “What is this crazy woman doing? Doesn’t she know I have things to do?” Ah well. Someday At least it keeps ME from being too bored. He will come around eventually

As always you’ve impressed me Mrs Lion! LL is lucky to have you as his momma!
Oh and I’m totally gonna attempt the pig painting! Should be….interesting/messy/hilarious/enough to drive mom up a wall!

Us non-teachers NEED Moms like you to publish ideas like this. Now, I just need a really big plastic sheet for the messy stuff so I can TRY not to freak out while my daughter is playing. *Sigh*…parenting a toddler seriously challenges me (and Moms like you help me see that HER experiences through it all are well worth my feeling uncomfortable about the potential “mess.”

This is amazing. I wish I had been as productive as a SAHM as you are! You are so imaginative. I love these activities and I’ll have to try some with my toddler on the weekends.

You know I love you for these kinds of posts! Next year, can we please divide up themes and trade info and activities since our boys are all the same age?!?!? I heart me some teacher planning and activities!

I’ve been doing the SAHM thing for six months now. During six of those six months I’ve wished there were some kind of “curriculum” I could follow to teach M age appropriate things and have different stuff to do each day. This post just blew my mind. I’m so impressed.

Hi there! I was really loving this series and very inspired! Is it possible to see some of the activities for the other monthly themes? My almost 15 month old is the perfect age for a lot of the stuff you’re doing. Thanks!

@andrea, Thanks! I am making the posts as we go throughout the year. Are you looking for previous months or future months? So far January, February, and March are posted to the site. April should be up soon (I am a little behind this month
