I’m about a month late with this, but this weekend Juliet finally got to smash a cake for her one year old celebration. I wanted to wait until a weekend where Mr. Chocolate was around since I knew if I mentioned a cake Drake would want to be in on the action, and I didn’t want to deal with 2 messy kids all by myself. I debated for a while about whether to buy a cake, or go all fancy with making and decorating one on my own (with which I have no experience whatsoever). In the end decided it would be easier to do a box mix cake with frosting since this was essentially a cake that was going to be annihilated by my kids.

I made 2 pan cakes and cut one to make the bottom layer, and then frosted it as best as my limited abilities let me.  At the very end I decided to add some blueberries to make it a little more playful and fun. I normally would have done chocolate since it’s yummier and then I would have wanted to eat some too, but  I felt like it might ruin the pictures so I went with plain vanilla for the cake and frosting.

For photos I wanted a large clean space with good light, which ended up being our empty dining room (I knew leaving that room empty had its purpose!).  I laid out a tablecloth and let Juliet have it.  Surprisingly she really wasn’t too keen on the cake at all at first, which shocked me since this is my food hound. I kind of assumed she would be all in it in a matter of moments, but she really didn’t want anything to do with the cake and kept crawling away from it.

After a few failed attempts to get her to stay with the cake, I let Drake come in the investigate. Juliet is fascinated with her big brother so as soon as she saw him playing with it, she moved closer. After he started to eat it and let her have a taste, she got a better idea of what to do and then dug in.

In the end I think both Drake and Juliet had a good time. Clean up wasn’t too bad — I plopped them into the tub afterwards for a nice bath. After all that delicious sugar and a fun bath, she slept for 2 hours during her nap. Glorious!
