Last year, we didn’t really do anything special for Easter – Jackson was only three-ish months old, and was way too young to actually care about anything other napping and milk. This year? He’s really starting to get excited about stuff, so we are diving in headfirst to the Easter festivities!
We debated dying eggs with him, but ended up deciding that he definitely wouldn’t have the patience or understand what was happening, so there was no reason. We’ll save that one for next year! But, we still wanted to do something along the same lines, so we found some craft eggs at Target along with some paint – right up his alley! It’s messy, colorful, and a bit silly…perfect for our little guy.
Of course, we ended up doing this on a night where he wasn’t feeling all that hot, so he was a bit cranky. And, I underestimated how badly he would want to eat the paint…it probably didn’t help that we did this activity with him in his high chair! He got mad at me a few times when I wouldn’t let him eat it, but after a while he actually seemed to get the idea! We had a blast for about five minutes, and then he was done. But, really, can you expect any activity with a 14-month old to last much longer than five minutes?
After Mr. Garland whisked him off to the bath, I took the rest of the eggs (he did about four out of the twelve) and rolled them around in the leftover paint in his high chair…it was basically the same thing he had been doing, so you can’t tell the difference between the ones he did and the ones I did.
They turned out incredibly cute, and I’m hoping the paint is durable enough to save them from year to year…how cute would it be to hide these every year on Easter?
I’m so glad we decided to give this a shot! I’d recommend doing it somewhere other than the high chair if you can, but I’d also recommend finding a surface where you can dump the paint out – he did much better once we gave him a few piles of paint to just play with, and the eggs turned out way cuter that way too!
How are you celebrating Easter with your little ones this year?

i’m impressed that you tried this with your 14-month old! LO is a little over 2 and i left the egg-dyeing to daycare.
