Our oldest will be turning 3 in August and he is still in a crib. Part of me is shocked that we haven’t moved him into a bed yet, especially because we had initially considered moving him into a crib before our youngest came along (18 month age gap) and giving his crib to his brother. We ended up getting a mattress for the pack-n-play and put it next to the crib, and there the two of them have happily resided for over a year. We told ourselves that we would move Lion out of his crib when he started trying to climb out of it, but other than one time when he was about 18-months old (he put his foot on the crib rail and looked at me and I said, “Don’t do that, it’s dangerous”), he’s never tried it again.
Lion actually loves his crib and, I think, feels a sense of security when he’s in it. Although his closest friend is already in a toddler bed, when we asked Lion if he wanted a bed too, he responded, “No, I like my crib.” Mr. Dolphin and I have been terrified about moving him to a bed because the time he actually falls asleep fluctuates greatly nowadays and I don’t want him popping in and out of bed for two hours after we put him down for the night. And so, we haven’t pushed it much.
However, as Lion grows taller I worry that he’ll be running out of space in his crib. Additionally, Panda is running out of room in his pack-n-play. I think it’s finally time to start pushing Lion in the direction of his own bed. We have two dilemmas, though. 1) When do we move Lion into a “big boy” bed given that we are considering moving? and 2) Do we move both kids into beds simultaneously or move Lion to a bed and Panda into the crib?
Timing
We thought we would move Lion into a floor bed around his third birthday, which is in August. However, we recently started having some conversations about trying to sell our condo and move into a townhouse or a single family home (due to complaints from our new downstairs neighbors about our kids being to noisy plus our expectation that interest rates will rise). We anticipate that if we do try to sell our home we will put it on the market in September and, if it doesn’t sell quickly, then pull it off the market and try again in early spring.
Whatever we do, I want Lion to feel as comfortable as possible with the transition. I see multiple possible scenarios here. We could move Lion to a floor bed ASAP so that he has time to get used to it before we move. We could keep Lion in the crib then move him to a floor bed when we move homes (of course, there could be more than one move if we have to rent before identifying our ideal home). We could keep Lion in the crib now, then bring the crib with us and let him continue sleeping in it after we move for a couple of months. I’m not really sure what the best scenario is for Lion.
One transition or two?
While Lion has never tried to climb out of his crib, Panda has definitely made a couple of attempts. He hasn’t successfully made it out of his pack-n-play yet, but I think he would be seriously determined to do so if he saw Lion in a bed rather than a crib. We have the kids room share and Panda wants to be wherever his big brother is. We have their two cribs right next to each other and they often stand up and hug, talk to each other or play before they fall asleep (if Panda hasn’t fallen asleep by the time Lion goes to bed) or when they wake up (if they wake up at the same time).
Would it be completely crazy to move them both into floor beds at the same time?
Right now, when I put Panda down for the night, we read books, I sing him his favorite song, give him his lovey and put him in his crib. Although he’s happy as a clam throughout his bedtime routine, the second I lay him down in the pack-n-play, he rolls over, stands up and starts crying. I make a beeline for the door, leave the kids’ room and close the door behind me. Panda cries/shrieks for about one minute, then quietly lays down and goes to sleep. If we move him to a floor bed, I suspect he will immediately try to run after me. While he has great language and communication skills, I suspect he still won’t grasp our explanations of the big kid bed and the need for him to sleep in it.
And yet, some part of me is leaning toward moving Lion and Panda into beds simultaneously.
When we went on our cruise earlier this year, both days that we put Lion and Panda in the nursery during the day, they fell asleep holding hands or sleeping on top of each other. I wonder if they would actually be happier if we put two mattresses on the floor together. Of course, Lion is not the best sleeper and moves around a lot when he sleeps, so that might not be the best option.
Additionally, because Lion does like his crib quite a bit, I wonder if he would be mad if we gave it to Panda. He might want to climb in and sleep with Panda. He might resent Panda for getting the crib. And even if just kept Panda in the pack-n-play, I wonder if Lion would be jealous that Panda gets to keep his old sleeping situation.
Would simultaneous transitions be workable?
Has anyone transitioned to a toddler/floor bed around the same time as a move from one home to another? Anyone else try to transition more than one child at the same time? Any other thoughts, advice or words of wisdom would be most welcome!

We moved older DS to twin bed with a bed tent to give that cosy, protected feeling and moved younger DS to the crib.

I have no advice but that picture is TOO CUTE.
Actually, I have a bit of advice – we paid a sleep consultant when we moved B to a toddler bed (not just for that, we had bigger sleep problems) and she said that before about 2.5 kids didn’t really have the impulse control to stay in a bed, nor did they really have the reasoning skills to understand why they should. So do with that what you will.

I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. My 2 year old was in a crib until one night when he asked to sleep with his brother on his twin mattress that is on the floor. They loved it. They roll all over each other but apparently it doesn’t bother them like it bothers me. They now love to sleep together! The only issue is they wake each other up so we are always up early.

The last 6 months have brought a lot of changes for my oldest – new sibling, new house, new school etc (we moved from CA to OR). I was too really worried about transitioning to a bed since there already was so much going on.
When we moved, we had to wait two days for our stuff to arrive. During that time, LO was sleeping on an inflatable mattress and did ok. So we made the jump to the toddler bed (I.e. didn’t reinstall the railing on his crib). Next step is going to be a big boy bed, which will happen when we move again in two weeks. Overall it’s been ok, although he does get out of his bed in the evenings (but before he used to scream for us so it’s not that different…)

@erinbaderin: I totally believe your sleep consultant but mine was an exception to the rule. He was around 2 when we moved him to a floor bed and he didn’t even *think* of getting out of bed on his own. So weird. It’s like he *thought* it was a crib

I moved took the rail off my kid’s crib a few days before she turned three and she wasn’t close to being too big for it (and she’s 80th percentile for height). She stayed in her bed wonderfully. Do not regret keeping Lion in there so long. I would start with moving Lion, then when he’s good, move Panda (unless both boys seem all excited for Panda to get a real bed – then I’d just go with it). Moving a kid so young if you don’t need to just seems like asking for trouble.

We moved our boy at 20 months to a floor bed out of a packnplay. He didn’t even think about getting out of bed for 5 months. So it’s not always bad early! I’d get them two twins or even a queen and let them sleep together.

I moved my middle child when he was 20 months to a queen mattress on the floor because I needed the crib for his baby sister. I put rails up on either side and stuffed a large body pillow under the fitted sheet at the foot of the bed. He did great, but he has always been a great sleeper. Around 6 months in he realized he could get out of the bed and we had a rough week of him getting up all night long. I ended up putting one of those door knob things on the door so he couldn’t leave. Once he realized he couldn’t get out of his room he stopped getting out of bed. I would suggest just getting everyone on a floor bed at one time. Rip it off like a Band-Aid rather than drag it out for months with “stages” of sleeping arrangement adjustments that will just disrupt their sleep even more.

@erinbaderin: How did you like your sleep consultant? We’ve considered getting one for our oldest because he has other sleep issues (frequent night wakings including occasional screaming where he can’t shake whatever is bothering him).

@Megan: We’re hoping our kids will enjoy sleeping together, too! Hopefully it doesn’t keep them up all night, though!

@Grace: Yes, we thought moving into a big kid bed before we needed was asking for trouble. But with Panda, I suspect he’s going to really be motivated to climb out of his crib once he sees his big brother out of it. We’ll see, though!

@brownepiano: That’s awesome! Hopefully our kids respect invisible boundaries, too…

@Lauren: I didn’t even think about it in terms of the different stages just prolonging the adjustment for everyone! Since they share the same room, that makes a lot of sense, though,

@erinbaderin: @mrs.kiwi: DS never seemed to understand he could leave his bed either. We converted the crib to a toddler bed at 20 months and while he climbed in no problem, he’d always wait for us to get him. A month later we converted it fully a bed and still the same. He just waited for us.

We have boys the same age spread as you just about – DS1 is turning 3 in September and DS2 just turned 1. They don’t share a room, but we’ve had to juggle sleeping arrangements a few times in the last year for one reason or another.
DS1 loved his crib and slept super well in it EXCEPT he figured out how to crawl out of his pack n play when he was 27 months and inevitably tried to apply the same logic to this crib. So we were forced to transition him before he hurt himself. However, a floor bed was too open and freaked him out. So we got him the Privacy Pop tent with a twin mattress inside and it gives him the security and enclosure of a crib but in a twin size space. He figured out how to unzip himself and wander out after a few days and because we have some security issues (single story house, he knows how to the unlock the front door, parents terrified that the child would wander at night), we had to figure out a way to keep him in his room. But other than the first 2 days where he cried a little because he was unfamiliar with the situation, he has slept beautifully in his bed and really loves it.
Before we found the Privacy Pop however, we considered this bed:

The idea was we would turn it around so that the L-shaped sides would create rails at the side and foot of the bed and get the thinnest mattress possible so the sides would be as high as possible. It would be a wee bit too tall for my kid to attempt to climb out (we wouldn’t have put a nightstand next to the bed) and we were going to put this gym mat on the floor next to it in case DS1 was dumb enough to try and jump.

The nice thing about this bed is that its open at the bottom to accommodate either extra storage or a trundle. So if you wanted to transition both boys, Panda could sleep on the lower trundle if you like and then push the trundle in to save space during the day. But I think a crib + Flaxa could work since it would look like Lion is in a giant crib too.
DS2 slept in the PNP with a mattress for a LONG time (like even after we transitioned DS1) because I was too lazy to disassemble/reassemble the crib and move it to the next room. I finally did before he turned a year because my kids are really tall and long and while he fit just fine in the PNP, it seemed dumb to not let him sleep in a bigger bed. DS2 had zero issues with the crib but LOVES his brother’s tent. Its like his favorite place to be in the house. So DH and I are certain we’re either going to have to buy a second tent for DS2 or we will give him DS1’s tent if DS1 decides he’s okay with a normal bed. For now, DS1 LOVES his bed and sleeps 12 hours at night and naps 2-3 hours solidly in it at home on the weekends, so we ain’t trying to mess with that.
If I had to have my boys share a room, I would either get them 2 tents and leave the flap open and put a lock on the bedroom door, or I’d do the Flaxa bed + crib combination.

We moved our 18 month old to a toddler bed before we had our second baby. It was a couple months before she figured out she could get out of bed on her own and by then she was used to sleeping and going to sleep in the bed. I had prepared myself for no sleep for months and it turned out to be really easy. I’d move them both at the same time. Rip off the band aid all at once

If it were me I’d put them both in floor beds at the same time to only have to do the transition once. Now I don’t know if I’d do it before or after you moved though.
We moved DS out of his crib just after he was 2.5. It was months before he realized he could get out. He would wake up in the morning and call for us to get him. I loved it. We did go through a while of him getting out of bed what felt like 100 times each night but once the novelty wore off he went to bed and stayed in bed great and still does at 4.

We moved Lil Pizza to a toddler bed when she was 3…and I only did it bc my husband asked me to get out big girl out of the crib :P. She even got herself out of there from time to time when she was younger but I just kept prolonging it. Fast forward 1.5 years and she still every so often comes to our bed in the middle of the night or wakes us up earlier than we would like (which we didn’t have issues with at all before). I’m planning to move my youngest (turning 2 tomorrow!) when she is closer to 3 as well and want to move both of them to floor beds in one room. Currently they sleep in separate rooms. I feel like all kids will respond differenly so just go with your gut with timing and hope for the best. ;). Good luck!!
