Here’s what we have on our registry that has to do with what babies do most: eat, sleep, and poop!
1) Full-sleeved bibs – To help deal with the mess when eating solids, these bibs are a must. They cover the whole upper body like a backwards shirt so any cute little outfits won’t be ruined. Well, that’s the idea, anyway.
2) Medela Pump In Style – This is one of the mostly highly recommended brands of breast pumps around. I’ll be going back to work when the baby is about four and a half months old, so I’ll need to pump if I want to continue providing exclusive breastmilk.
3) Baby-Led Weaning Book – I’m not sure where I first learned about this method of introducing solid foods, but I love it. No purees, no spoons, just a big mess! It makes sense to me, so I’m going to give it a try.
4) Playtex Drop-Ins Nurser Set – The were recommended to me by a friend on twitter. I had no idea where to start with bottles, but she said these are very convenient, especially when used with this breast milk storage kit.
5) Nursing Cover – I plan on breastfeeding and since I’m pretty modest, I know I’ll need something to make me feel comfortable nursing anytime, anywhere.
6) Sound Machine – White noise has been known to help babies sleep, so I’m going to do whatever it takes to help that process! This one can also hook up to an iPod and has a nightlight.
7) Summer Infant Slim & Secure Video Monitor – I first discovered this video monitor while babysitting an adorable toddler a few years ago. I was completely addicted to it! I would check it every time I heard the slightest noise and it was so comforting to be able to see her there in her crib, safe and sound, without opening the door and disturbing her sleep.
8) Diaper Sprayer – This is attached to the toilet so all the… um… poop from cloth diapers goes down the drain instead of sitting in the nursery.
9) The Miracle Blanket – While swaddling seems like something a couple of college educated parents can figure out, I’ve heard these easy velcro type swaddlers are much more convenient, especially for middle of the night diaper changes. We also registered for the Summer Infant SwaddleMe, just in case the Miracle blanket isn’t working for us.
10) BumGenius Cloth Diapers – Here’s my thought on cloth: I really want to go for it, but it’s a big investment up front. If we aren’t gifted enough diapers or we don’t have the funds to purchase them, we’ll have to fall back on disposable. I do plan to use disposable for the first few weeks and on long trips, but if we do use cloth, I hear these Bum Genius one size snap diapers are the way to go.
11) Diaper Wet Bag – For cloth diapers, you really need something that can go into the wash with the diapers to limit the poo/pee to hand contact. I plan to have one in the bathroom for poopy diapers, one in the nursery for wet diapers, and a small one in the diaper bag for quick trips.
12) 20 inch Crib Skirt – I love the look of long dust ruffles with cribs. I especially love the tailored look of this one. Once the baby gets a little older and the mattress is lowered, we can even store things under the crib and it will be hidden by the long crib skirt.
White Crib Sheets – I had a hard time choosing baby bedding. I’m not into themes, so that ruled out 90% of the choices. Then, I started thinking about the decorative elements of the room that I wanted to include and nothing seemed to fit. Finally, I realized that white bedding is much easier to keep clean than colored. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but stay with me: you can bleach white sheets. They don’t fade in the sun, they just get whiter (for a natural, chemical-free bleeching technique).
13) Aden + Anais Swaddle Blankets – These come highly recommended from other mommy friends for swaddling and general baby blanket uses: covering cold toes, draping over the car seat during impromptu naps, snuggles, etc.
14) Cooshee Changing Pad – With a wipeable surface, this changing pad is in a league of its own. Those fabric covered ones just can’t compete!
15) Cloth Wipes – What’s the point of using disposable wipes with cloth diapers? When changing a diaper, you put the wipe in the diaper, so cloth with cloth makes the most sense. I’d like to try Emily’s recipe for bum cleaning spray to use with the cloth wipes.
Whew! That’s a lot of stuff!! What are your favorite eat, sleep, and poop registry items?

The full-sleeved bib idea is great. We have the Bjorn smocks, and as we’ve started solids, no stained clothes yet (except the day I didn’t use one!)
I’m also a big proponent of 5, 9, 13, and 14!

Oooh.. the full sleeved bib is awesome! I have #5 and love it!
I don’t use it as much as I used to though since we don’t go out much during feeding time.

I’m interested in number 3 as well. I love the crib skirt.

I borrowed the Baby-Led Weaning book from my local library on a whim, and I totally loved it. FWIW, BLW is less messy than purees because solid food doesn’t fly and splatter all over the walls and floor like puree (sometimes I would cave into pressure from my mom and MIL and feed my son purees, and I can tell you I was cursing them after every meal while I was scrubbing the walls).
I have that exact same nursing cover; I like it but I wish I had a darker print because I use it to block out the light when flying (and son is held in arms).
Cloth diapering – really like the BG diapers. Velcro is great for quick changes when they’re young, snaps last longer and cannot be undone by older babies.
Diaper sprayer is a must and for the wet bags make sure the seams are sealed because otherwise after awhile the stitching around the seams loosens and the wet bag is no longer waterproof.
Loved the Aden & Anais blankets! We still use them (as all-purpose blankets) even though my son’s now a toddler.

The Halo Swaddle Sacks are SOOOO much better than the Summer SwaddleMe. The Halo ones are much larger and stronger, the SwaddleMe’s just come loose and the baby gets out of them really easily.
I also love my Medela Freestyle Pump. I love some of the extra features it has over the PISA.
As always, happy to see lists with A+A on them because they are amazing!

ah thanks for the tip re: the drop in kit! didn’t know about that.

nice to see since i have some of these on my registries.
re: #14 – the negative review i read that scared me off is that it “sticks” to anything. so if you lean it against the wall, it takes off paint. also, there’s some chemical odor to it.
did you find that to be the case for you?
re: #1 – love the idea – does it actually work though?

@Mrs. Bee: Princess Lasertron told me about those! She said it’s really convenient to use with those bottles because you never have to pour milk from one container to another.

@tequiero21: I don’t have the cooshee yet, so I don’t know about the smell or stickiness, but I know a couple people who have them and haven’t heard anything negative.

@Thehistoryofus: Thanks for the tips! The freestyle looks great, but for $100 more, I’m not sure the extras are worth it for me. I’ve heard that it’s easy to make regular pumps hands-free with the right bra.

@mrs. tictactoe: Just a tip, at BabysRUs, you can use the 20% coupon on the medela pumps AND a 10% off completion code. This brought the Freestyle down to $300 for us which was what we had budgeted.

For any NYC mommas looking for the Medela Freestyle, we got an incredible deal at Brooklyn Baby World (http://brooklynbabyworld.com/store/shop_product.php?UPC=12749) -$275 total for the entire kit! Cheaper than Amazon and BuyBuyBaby (with coupons)!
Love the mobility and efficiency of the Freestyle!

I kept thinking that cloth diapering was such a HUGE investment up front… but I don’t think so now anymore. If you can get them during the infamous buy 5 get 1 free sales, then you’ll get 12 diapers for around $180-ish. And if there are no sales to be seen, most lots of 12 are currently going for around $204 right now. Which may seem like a lot, but have you seen the price of disposables lately? My friends spend that amount in less than a year (and some in a few months because of the special brands of disposables that they buy).
I hear that the magic number of cloth diapers to have on hand is 12, but I’ve been inspired by John and Sherry of younghouselove to start out with 12– that’s how much they originally bought and didn’t buy any extras for the first year (not sure if they’ve added to their collection since or not).

**oops, I meant that the “magic number” was 18, not 12…

I have the PIS but if I had to do it over again I would get a Hygeia, because they’re recyclable and you can give/sell them when you’re done.
We are CD people and have a wet bag only for the diaper bag. We use a regular plastic trash can with some water and detergent in it in the bathroom. We dump it in the washer or use a little stick to retrieve the diapers. To be honest, poop contact happens, and after the first million times it’s not so bad. that’s my philosophy.

@Mrs. Bee: @mrs. tictactoe: The Playtex Dropins breastmilk storage kit is awesome! Pump directly into the liners!
Re: Medela pumps, I do like the Freestyle over the PIS (I’ve had both, one for each baby). If you can find the Freestyle on sale, it might be worth it. It’s so much lighter and easier to carry around. Fits in the palm of my hand… A plus for working moms and those on-the-go a lot. I see no differences in the motor strength of the Freestyle either.
If you’re in NYC, I heard the Brooklyn Burlington Coat Factory/Baby Depot usually sells them at a steep discount. Therapie NY on the UWS currently has it for $244 since they are going out of business. Also, some insurance companies cover pumps now. I used FSA money to buy mine!!

We use the Munchkin wet bag we got at Target, but we have only been using it about a month and a half so I can’t vouch for its quality! The size is more than enough for the diaper bag for sure.

Wet bags – I have a Mommy’s Touch that lasted a little over a year, now it leaks from the seams. I also have a Planet Wise that after also about a year will sorta leak moisture/humidity (not enough to get stuff next to it soaking wet, but feeling damp) from the zipper. My favorite is the Rumperooz wet bag (it’s a D-shaped one) – I’ve used it as a mobile diaper pail on trips (there’s a loop that snaps open and closed that you can use to hang it on a towel rail), and now that my son is potty trained, it’s great for the beach/pool.

I have a lot of these same things on my registry/have already bought them. another place to look for diapers is craisglist or your local listserve thing {like what mrs. bee uses}. even if you are squeamish about buying used diapers, a lot of the time you can find brand new cloth diapers the were just never used & now the parents are trying to get rid of some stuff, at a significant discount.

This post kind of freaks me out, as we have MANY of the things you have on this list, including the painter’s smock (Must have for finger painting), the exact same hooter hider, pump, diaper sprayer, and BG diapers!

I love cloth diapers. We used a couple Bumgenius but mostly we stuck to Fuzzibunz. They have adjustable elastic to make sure there aren’t any leaks on trimmer baby legs (like my daughters). You’re right about the upfront cost but it’ll be totally worth it. If you want to save you can always use prefolds (about $20-30 for a dozen) and just buy several covers (I heard great things about Thirsties Duo Wrap). I plan on adding those to our stash for baby number #2.

those gro-via wipes are AMAZING! we have them and they’re my husband’s favorite wipes to use.
We also have that exact same planet wise wet bag, love that too.
