4 months! Our girl is just growing by leaps and bounds. We love every single minute we spend with her, and even though I’m always excited when I’m able to easily get her to bed for the night, I definitely miss her while she’s asleep. She interacts with us so much and really studies our faces trying to understand what our expressions mean. And she really does smile nonstop. She’s so happy and I wonder how we were so lucky to have such a beautiful, happy and healthy baby! We are so blessed.
See how big she’s grown and I’ll see you at the end!
Our “state of the family” right now is this:
What we’ve learned: Sometimes we push against each other more than work together. This definitely results in a lot of resentment from both sides. We have to work really hard to acknowledge that each of us plays a huge part in us being successful as a family and our contributions are equally as important. Parenting, managing careers and busy schedules are a lot of work and it’s important for us to support one another! This is something we need to work on each and every day.
What we’re enjoying right now: Watching how much Baby H is growing and learning. We know that so many exciting things are around the corner – sitting up, first foods, first words, etc – but we need to live in the moment and enjoy how exciting she is right now! She’s just so much fun.
What our biggest struggles are: We’re still working on napping. Sigh. It’s a lot of work!
What has been Baby H’s most exciting milestone: No major milestones right now. We know she’s on the verge of rolling from back to tummy (she rolled from tummy to back at 9 weeks), so we’re just waiting for the day when she flips over!
What we’re looking forward to: Seeing more and more of her personality come out! She’s such a silly girl!

Happy 4 months! Naps were a nightmare from 3.5-5.75 months for us and then one day poof he slept for 1.5 hours again. There’s a sleep regression that happens around 4m and can affect naps but not night (hooray!) Someone told me that there wasn’t much I could do and the naps would get better. I was so grateful for that advice because I did just let it go and ended up making a joke of his 7 minute naps. Before I knew it, he was napping just fine.

@Mrs. Stroller: Thanks for the insight into naps at this age! She’s usually good for 30-45 mins in her crib (of course could nap forever in the Ergo!). Can you please call our nanny up and tell her not to worry about it either?
She’s a stickler for the naps (especially because she’s watch 2 babies!).

I figured Mr. H wouldn’t mind that I bought the cute plaid mary jane Trumpette socks if I also got the skater shoe socks!

such a cute baby! How did the naps end up over time? I have a little one (15 weeks coming) and he loves to fall asleep with motion (rocking, strolls etc) & will only sleep in crib for 20minutes. He fusses for a bit when he’s tired. He’ll usually go to sleep pretty easily if I’m holding him but if other care takers are – he cries a bit.

@Kelly: Naps are a lot better! She’s not a great napper (a much better nigh sleeper) but if she’s having a really good day, can take a 2-3 hour nap! (although she’s a stinker and rarely does that on weekends when I’m home with her, haha). What has worked for us is doing at least one nap with her on her tummy – she sleeps much better that way. And we had to have her cry it out. It is HARD. But through that she has learned to self sooth and put herself to sleep, which is so important. Fortunately our first nanny was really strict about this and really got her napping better, and we stuck with it at home as well. We absolutely don’t rock her to sleep – when we know she’s tired, in her crib she goes and eventually she’ll go to sleep!

I should add she takes usually 3 naps a day – her first is relatively short (30-40 mins), her second nap is always on her tummy and is usually 60-90 mins, and then her third nap is sometimes shorter or she’ll do a really long one, just depends! We really try and follow her cues and make sure she doesn’t get too over tired before we put her down for a nap.

thanks so much! When did you do the cry it out? and did you do it for every nap (~3 times?) I’m thinking we need to do CIO soon so he can learn to sleep on his own. Love your idea of taking pictures of her every week – i got that idea and have been doing that too except in a chair. I think laying down with a stuffed toy is better!

@Kelly: We started at about 16 weeks or so (that’s when our nanny started). Since we do a nanny share it was important Baby H could nap well as our nanny watches 2 babies! And yes, for every nap, it’s important we be consistent and we only take her out of her crib if we absolutely have to (i.e. if she’s been fussing/crying for 30 mins or an hour, we can check her diaper and put her back in). And if it is a time where she’s not settling down, she’s definitely not screaming her head off for a crazy long time. If she did that, something would be wrong. She’ll fuss/cry for a couple minutes, then suck her hand, then cry some more. You can tell when she’s giving into it more because the gaps between crying will get longer and longer.
But it is hard. It was hard to be away from her at work all week and then feel like I spent my weekends with her just crying at me! But it gets better and it’s rewarding knowing she can get herself to sleep. If we relied on having to get her asleep before putting her in her crib, we’d never get anything done and she wouldn’t be very self sufficient!
And thanks, we love doing the week shots too
