Oh the exciting things that 5 months brings! This huge milestone is marked with two new teeth, a little girl who can sit up on her own (when feet and hands are perfectly propped), smiles at everyone and tries to bite her mommy’s nose! And, most importantly, 5 months has brought us a little girl who gets harder and harder to leave each day because of her silly and sweet personality.

It’s so fun to watch her personality change with each of these week-by-week photos as well as the change in the season here in Chicago!

I actually made this little peasant top for Baby H! I promise she liked it.

One of the last warm days of summer!

It’s fall and time for snuggly sweatshirts!

We got a little “fancy” this day. A lady must always have her purse.

Our “state of the family” right now is this:

What we’ve learned:  We’ve worked a lot on compromise as a couple. We have far fewer arguments over silly day-to-day issues. It’s taken some work for us both to acknowledge that we’re equally exhausted and busy with our jobs. Once we finally agreed on mutual exhaustion, things got a lot better. Taking the focus off of “one-upping” each other as to who does more/works harder gives us more of an opportunity to focus on Baby H and just enjoy the times where all three of us are together. With Mr. H’s job as a business owner/wedding photographer, he’s often working weekends. Because I work Monday-Friday at my job, it’s important we cherish the days where we’re together!

What we’re enjoying right now: Oh, the smiles! Everywhere we go Baby H is smiling at someone. In the mornings when I get her up she doesn’t want to eat because she wants to smile at everything in her room. I feel so much pride when I’m out and about in the neighborhood and people comment that Baby H is the happiest baby they’ve ever met! On those days I know we’re doing something right (or that our child is very forgiving as we figure out this parenting thing).

What our biggest struggles are: Ordering takeout/delivery. There, I said it! While I was on maternity leave we did a big combination of ordering out and cooking. We tried tons of new restaurants and recipes! These days with our busy schedules, it’s a lot of restaurants and not a lot of recipes. Unfortunately with a baby and two working parents, something has to give and for us it was making good decisions about meals. It’s something we need to work on!

What has been Baby H’s most exciting milestone: Baby H is still not rolling from back to tummy (plenty of tummy to back when she feels like it). Sitting up has been our biggest thing to date! If we prop her legs “just so” and place her hands on the floor or on her legs, she can sit pretty well unassisted. Even our nanny has been impressed!

What we’re looking forward to: I cannot wait to start solids with her! We have chosen to wait until the 6 month mark and right now I think we’re planning on starting her off with avocado. I think it’s going to be so much fun and we’re both excited to make some interesting fruit and veggie concoctions!
