Now that Charlie and Olive are a little bit older (2 1/2 & 4 1/2) and can fully appreciate the experience, we’re going on our first family camping trip this month! I can’t tell you how excited I am because my family were extremely avid campers; we went camping in the mountains, on the beach, and even in the snow!
People often think that you need to buy a ton of gear to go camping, but we were budget campers and always went with just the basics – a tent, a lantern, and a stove – everything else we took we already had at home. Since we don’t have the space for a ton of camping gear in our small apartment now, all we bought was a tent for this trip since we already have a stove and lantern. Below I’ve created a guide of camping essentials, followed by a comprehensive packing checklist of everything you need for your family camping trip!
2) Coleman tent kit – This kit includes a mallet, broom and dustpan, steel tent stakes, and a tent stake puller. It’s not an absolute essential, but it is nice to have because the steel stakes are much sturdier than the plastic ones that come with the tent. You also need a hammer to pound the tent stakes into the ground. We’d usually bring our own, or use a rock in a pinch. The broom and dustpan set also comes in handy because you inevitably track dirt into the tent.
3) ALPS Self-Inflating Air Pad – This air mattress is super easy to set up since you don’t need a separate air pump, and it rolls up very small. Luckily our family can sleep anywhere — even on the floor — so we’ll just be taking some rugs and pads and lots of blankets that we have at home, but I know that a lot of people probably need a little extra cushioning to sleep comfortably.
4) Sleeping Bags – Growing up we always used regular blankets in tents and that’s what we’ll do since it’ll probably be easier if we share blankets with the kids. I didn’t want to buy anything extra unless we absolutely needed it, and we can definitely make do without sleeping bags since I’ve been to this exact site twice before. But as the kids get older, we’ll probably get everyone their own sleeping bag.
5) Lantern & Flashlight – You’ll definitely want to get a lantern. Once it gets dark you won’t have a light source other than the campfire, and you’ll need something that you can keep on and move around. Flashlights are also necessities for going to the bathroom at night. I’d recommend glow sticks as well (you can get them in the Target Dollar section) because they’re always a blast and they’re the perfect nightlight in the tent so kids don’t get scared.
6) Coleman Propane Stove – We had a very similar stove in my childhood, and I bet my parents still have it! Having two burners is awesome, and this stove works really great, but if you’re on a budget, we also have this single burner butane stove that’s been fantastic. Just don’t forget to buy propane or butane!
7) Cooler – You definitely need a cooler to keep your food cold. We don’t have one so we’ll either borrow one from a friend or buy a styrofoam cooler.
8) Chair – You can survive without camping chairs, but it is much more comfortable to sit around the campfire with them! They even make camping chairs for kids!
9) Marshmallow Roasting Sticks – Ok these are not a necessity, but we have these and they’re so much fun! They extend really long so little kids can safely roast their marshmallows in the campfire. Because what’s a camping trip without marshmallows!

Once you have the gear, the rest of what you need can be found around the house! The complete checklist is below, but I’ve also created a spreadsheet so you can edit and print if for your own use!

WT went on a 3 day music festival camping trip with us at 1 in a tent. Last summer we did the same music festival with 1 and 3 year old in a MONSOON! I had packed for heat and sun… luckily the festival is only an hour away so I could come home and regroup with rain boots and rain jackets!
Last fall we upgraded to a pop-up camper. We used it for the first time last weekend without the kids – a fun mom & dad weekend away and chance to get out all the kinks before throwing in two toddlers! It was amazing and we are soooo looking forward to camping trips this summer and NOT sleeping on the ground. I’m spoiled now! We found it for $2k on craiglist and I’m sure we’ll be able to recoup most of that if we decide it’s not for us or want to upgrade in the future. I totally recommend checking it out!!
I highly recommend battery powered fans!
I definitely recommend having a ‘camping’ checklist — take it with you so you can add everything you forgot to the list and be ready to update it before trip #2!

I’ve never been camping, and used to want to go so bad… but now I have absolutely no desire to! DH really wants to take the kids, and I joke that if he wants to go… I’ll stay nearby in a cabin in a nice, warm bed lol.

Can I suggest an addition? The absolute best tiny, affordable gear upgrade I ever made to our camping arsenal was to simply switch the flashlights for headlamps! They make an absolute world of difference when you’re doing things in the dark and you can use both hands instead of using one hand to hold the flashlight. Totally essential if you ever find yourself having to set up your tent in the dark for example. (but ideally don’t do that, ever.)
You can get cheap, reliable ones for less than $20: http://www.amazon.com/Petzl-E91-PE-Headlamp-Electric/dp/B0027GVIOW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1399603924&sr=8-3&keywords=headlamp

DH would be all over this, he loves camping and did it for years with his family in Ithaca. I went with him one year, it was awful cold and rainy in July We left a day early because it was miserable. That was the last year they all went, the family switched to cruising after that and I admit I love that so much more than camping I know DH wants to go locally with the kids sometime though.

We have that tent and it is awesome and very easy to set up. I second @pawprints recommendation about headlamps versus flashlights. They are more fun and much easier to use. I can’t wait to hear about your trip!
We are thinking about going camping near the Poconos during Memorial Day but will need to get a larger tent that will fit a pack n play.

We love camping with the kids!! We are amazed at how much room camping gear can take up. Tents and sleeping bags can be so bulky!
We have taken the kids several times and they just love it too which makes me so excited for all the camping trips in our future. I love bringing glow sticks, I also like to get them those glow necklaces for night time so I can find them when they step away from the camp fire at night.

This is such a great list!! Spencer has been dying to go camping and I just can’t even wrap my head around it. I may have to revisit this list if I lose the battle…

@LindsayInNY: we only have a tent that doesn’t take up that much space, a small one burner stove, and a lantern. doesn’t take up as much space as our two car seats!
