Back in the day when I used to read (who has time for that luxury now?!), I loved series. There is nothing so wonderful as to fall in love with characters or a style of writing and be able to continue the story over a series of books. These days the only books I read are children’s books, but recently Drake seems to have a passion for series as he likes books done with similar characters or by similar authors. There aren’t a lot of picture book series, but these are ones that fall in that category.
If You Give A Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff – I bought this book for Drake a long time ago but he never cared for it. I would read it and he would sometimes listen to it, and other times try to close the book on me. He just want interested so I stopped picking it for bedtime. A few months ago I picked it up again and Drake fell in love with it. He saw there were other books on the back of the dust cover and immediately asked for them. Through the library and some yard sales, I picked up a few more books from the series and they are all favorites now. Drake has been asking for more, but I think we have them all now — that’s how much his love for this series has grown!
Llama Llama by Anna Dewdney – I love the cute rhymes in this series. We started off with Llama Llama Time to Sharewhich really helped with teaching Drake to be a better friend. I like how the series is tackle some of the bigger issues older kids like Drake might encounter like bullying and sharing with new friends as they age.
Manners by Carrie Finn – We own a lot of these little manners books. They are all short stories on their own, but the style is similar and the words repetitive in nature that over time Drake has learned how to read most of the books from this series on his own. It’s really helped teach him a lot more sight words. It’s an added bonus of course that they all deal with manners.
Octoanuts – The Octanuats have grown from a little book series created by 2 graphic designers into a multimedia juggernaut with a show on Disney, toys, books etc. I owned several of the books long before I had Drake, but he has really taken to the series recently. He got some toys for his birthday too and now loves to react the stories we read together.
Berenstein Bears – The Berenstein Bears were my favorite stories growing up. I loved listening to the stories at night when my mother read them to me. When I cleaned out my room after I went away to college I kept my own large collection of these books to share one day with my own kids. I am so thrilled I did and cant wait to unearth them from the basement soon to read to Drake.
Mr Men & Little Miss – This is another childhood series of mine that I loved. Apparently Mr. Chocolate did too, as Drake recently found a small stash of these books at Mr. Chocolate’s parents home. Drake loves all the different characters and keeps asking for more. I might have to dig around my basement to see if I have any saved now too.
Pigeon by Mo Willems – I never read the Pigeon stories but have heard nothing but great things about them. Also by the same author is the Elephant and Piggie series.
Other popular series include Pete the Cat, Skippyjon Jones, Olivia, Curious George, and for board books Sandra Boynton, Eric Carle, and How Do Dinosaurs.
Which are some of your favorite children’s book series?

Interesting! We love the Bearenstein Bears in our household. We used to like the Thomas & Friends series, but Dean has grown out of Thomas now. He also likes the Pigeon series, but I’m not as big of a fan. They aren’t bad, just not my cup of tea. Also, another series that we like is the Biscuit series by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. You might want to look into that.

She is obsessed, I mean OBSESSED with the brown bear series right now. I personally love the “If you give a…” series and always loved Berenstein Bears as a kid, DH always loved little critter. I like reading Sandra Boyntons books because they are nice and short and keep my kids attention, since their spans are short.

Growing up I used to love both the Fances books and the Patrick books, both of which I’ve actually saved. Although looking through the books I have, it doesn’t look like I have them all, so I may need to add to that collection!
