We have had a couple birthdays and special occasions in our family recently that have required me to make a cake. Although I love baking, my usual cake go-to are cupcakes… not layer cakes. Something about frosting a layer cake gives me anxiety! However for these events I really wanted to make a layer cake, so I went in search of some easy and simple frosting techniques that still look elegant and a little fancy! All of these are super simple and don’t require any special equipment to do! Here’s what I found!

I actually used this technique on one of the cakes I made a few weeks ago and it worked beautifully! It was so easy to do, and it made my cake look so fancy! I also had no idea that it was called the “Petal” technique.

Pretty sure I can handle swiping my knife up! It literally can’t get much simpler than this! I’m going to try this one on the next cake I make!

I have my eye on this technique for Mini Pbj’s birthday day cake next spring! I love the way it looks on white buttercream like this, but I think I might try it with pink!

When all else fails….just don’t even frost the sides! “Naked” cakes are pretty popular these days and I think this one is adorable!

So if you’re like me, and have always dreaded making layer cakes because you’re not the greatest at frosting, I hope these give you some inspiration and some encouragement to try one of them out on your next cake!
