Dear Second Born,
It feels like we’ve just met and at the same time like you’ve been in our family for years. On March 3, 2016 you entered this world and completely altered our status quo in the best way possible. You have filled our household with a new spark, a new energy, and more love than I thought possible.

When I first saw you I was surprised at how different you looked from your brother, but that was only the start of your differences. What a gift it has been to see your features and personality emerge. Daddy and I describe you as happy, determined, cuddly, and stubborn. I love your dark, crazy hair, your cheeky grin, your scrunchy nose, and your infectious laugh. You and your brother are both handsome in your own ways, but since he looks like Daddy it has been fun to hear people say you look a little bit more like Mommy.
You were a content and happy newborn but a poor sleeper. I was frustrated and tired during those middle of the night nursing sessions but I was never upset with you. While I rocked you and held you close I would list all the things I was grateful for in my head, and you and your health always topped my list. I don’t miss the lack of sleep but I look back on those night wake-ups as quality time with my darling boy.
You are adventurous and brave when it comes to movement and exploring. You like new toys and new experiences, and you love being outdoors and watching the world go by. I can’t help but smile when I go to pick you up because you wave your little legs and arms so fast when someone you love gets close. When you hear your brother’s voice from another room your whole face lights up. Watching the two of you play and interact is heart-melting. You have recently started zooming your cars on the floor the way he does and it’s wonderful to watch you learn from him.
I’m sorry your nap schedule is not as heavily protected as your brother’s was when he was your age, but I’m not sorry you get to attend music classes, go to museums, the zoo, and other play dates that help broaden your horizons.
I’m sorry that sometimes you get screen time before age 1 because your brother is watching TV while you’re in the room, but I’m not sorry you are learning new things and engaging your curiosity.
I’m sorry that your brother can be a bit rough in the way he shows his affection to you, but I’m not sorry you have a best friend and playmate for life who loves you unconditionally.
I’m sorry you rarely get alone time with Mommy and Daddy, but I’m not sorry you were born into a happy and family-focused household that enjoys spending time together.
My second born, I am constantly amazed at how you are paving your own way through life, reminding Daddy and I that every child is uniquely different and special. Thank you for going with the flow but also for speaking up (in your own way) when you need to be heard. You have such an ambitious and joyful spirit; my love for you continues to spill out day after day. You were the best surprise of my life. Thank you for continuing our family.
Love always and forever,
Mom

Love this! Our second borns are 4 days apart, so I can totally relate. We tend to follow his sister’s busy schedule so he may not get many crib naps but he gets to interact with so many people and see/learn new things everyday.

I know this is an old post, but i couldn’t not comment. My boys were born 24th July 14 and 9th March 16, so both this post and your post about your first born feel very personal, as it could have been me writing them. Thank you ( I am weeping like a baby right now!)
