My sister, who is now 9 months pregnant, asked me to take some pictures of her and my niece as the big day of giving birth approaches. I hadn’t touched an SLR in about a year, but it was so fun trying to take some sweet moments with them! Her first request? “Please don’t take pictures of my face.” I’m sure we all remember how wonderfully bloated and tired we felt at 9 months! Instead of doing regular portraits, I tried to capture the softness and tenderness of motherhood that we can all relate to.
My sister doesn’t dress up my niece at all, so I was of course super excited to be able to dress up a little girl for once! Her 2nd birthday was just the other day, so I quickly assembled this outfit from Zara along with Baby Pencil’s Tom shoes. This would be my ideal kind of outfit if I ever had a girl!
We then moved in the bedroom for some warm, snuggly shots. Who needs an outfit when you have your birthday suit? (With a diaper, of course.) We made my niece give her unborn brother lots of kisses and hugs!
You cannot be a 2 year old in a photoshoot without some tears… However, I loved how these came out! The look a child gives their mother is the most unfiltered look of helplessness and tenderness.
“Where does it hurt? Let me kiss the boo boo away!”
I always love black and white!
Did anyone else take some super casual, non-professional photos at home? I thought it was so great to throw it together at home in 30 minutes and cost zero dollars!
Funnily enough (or not funny exactly) towards the end, my niece pulled her elbow wrong and we had to rush to urgent care because she had somehow dislocated her elbow. We discussed how how hectic and crazy toddler life can be in a drop of a hat! She’s totally fine, but that’s basically how the photoshoot ended!

These are wonderful! Poor baby with her elbow though – toddlers are so unpredictable and wild!

@psw27: Yes, seriously! I felt bad that I took some real tear shots when she was in pain, but she really was OK after they popped it back in!

These photos came out so beautiful. and ugh I also feel the same about photographs of my face being in my second trimester with my first now. I’ve never been this heavy in my life and I do feel so bloated and self conscious. I’m so happy there is a way to capture such precious moments and this turned out beautifully.
