This past month has been pretty good for the Pizza family. Baby Pizza, who is nearing 21 months old, and Lil’ Pizza, who is 4 years old, are spending longer periods of time playing together as well as independently. I’m also finally feeling more confident, more relaxed and simply more like myself these days with the two girls. I’m sure the changes in the girls as they keep growing and learning has helped me get to this place, but I have intentionally been doing a few small things that I think have also been a benefit to me.
The Scientific 7-Minute Workout
When it comes to working out, I think of every possible excuse to not exercise. My friend told me about the Scientific 7-minute workout and it’s helped me to start exercising again. There have been numerous articles about it including in the New York Times, which was published a few years ago, explaining why and how this exercise works. I know it’s probably not the only form of exercise that I should be doing, but my heart rate goes up, I break a sweat when I really push myself and it being “only 7 minutes” motivates me to do it again and again.
Put on makeup
Too often I was doing errands hoping I didn’t run into anyone because I was in my sweats only appearing half-awake. I don’t always want to put on makeup, but I realized that I felt more confident leaving the house if I at least put on foundation. A few months ago, I switched my foundation and tried Sulwhasoo ‘Perfecting Cushion’ Foundation Compact and I love the coverage it gives me. It probably takes me a minute to put on so I don’t know why I didn’t use it for my day-to-day until recently.
In our house, Mr. Pizza is the big coffee drinker but this past year I’ve become more dependent on my morning coffee to get my day going. Sometimes I try to skip the coffee in the morning but noticeably feel more sluggish and easily irritated. Last year, Mr. Pizza switched over to using a French press and I’ve really enjoyed the taste. An electric kettle makes the whole process fairly quick.
Clean up earlier
I used to wait to do the dishes until after the kids went to sleep and Mr. Pizza and I ate and relaxed a bit. But the pile of dishes waiting for one of us to do made it hard to completely relax and enjoy our nights. Now that Baby Pizza and Lil’ Pizza are playing together more, I’m able to get the dishes done before the girls are ready for bed. It feels so much better to not stare at a huge pile of dishes when it’s finally our time without the kids. Throughout the day, I’ve been trying to get the girls to clean up with me so the house doesn’t look disastrous at the end of a long day. Sometimes, I will turn on a 5 minute timer or listen to a few songs to make the clean up time a bit more playful and less of a chore.
Quiet time together
While Baby Pizza takes her afternoon nap, Lil’ Pizza and I have our own quiet time. Lil’ Pizza can be content with reading a stack of books, listening to audiobooks, drawing, coloring or writing (she enjoys copying words from her favorite books). I will use that time to read, go on social media, clean, or cook. I have found that Lil’ Pizza enjoys this time most when we are sitting next to each other doing similar activities, so I try to start this time also reading and writing alongside her.
. . . . .
I know all these actions are pretty minor, but sometimes it’s all the small things collectively that help makes the difference in our days. And you know, when a mom is happy, the whole family is happy.
What are the “little things” that you do that you enjoy?

Yup! I do dish-washing dance parties with the kids. I put the music on and “dance with them” while washing the dishes.

Wait so 7 min is all you need and it’s still effective? I need to know more!!
And I totally agree with make up and putting on real clothes; it’s so hard to put effort in most days but every time I do I feel great the whole day!

@snowjewelz: I love the seven minute workout! My doctor told me about it. . My toddler usually “works out” with me. She’ll squat and giggle when I do the wall sits, and will lay on her belly when I do pushups and planks. It’s so cute!
Like @Mrs. Pizza said, it’s not all you need, but given that before I felt like I didn’t have time to do anything then it has to be an improvement! My doctor said the 7 minute workout 3 times a week plus walking most days was enough to maintain health.

I used the “Tone It Up” exercise and nutrition program to get back into shape after my first pregnancy and they have “5 daily moves” that I always try to do. You need minimal equipment and don’t need to be at a gym or do them sequentially.
I feel like even if I can’t get the rest of the workout done, at least I’ve done something. Also, my son loves imitating these moves.

I like doing dishes right after dinner! It does make us have more fun in our evenings! Just like when I work out first thing in the morning. I feel like so have much more free time.

@Mrs. Cheesecake: Love it, it’s the “dishwashing dance”! In the mornings, if I am using the blender to make smoothies, our whole family gets up to jump around while the blender is being super loud.

@snowjewelz: I am not tracking my progress in any sort of way, but I’ve been doing it for about 2 months (definitely not daily but still more consistent than anything I’ve done in a long time) and I remember even after a little over a week, I felt stronger. It’s a high intensity interval work out which works well for me because I need the change to keep me going – the 30 sec of 12 different exercises (even the change in music in that youtube video)…haha all of that helps me to keep going. Hopefully in a few months, I can say that I’m exercising in other ways…haha
Oh and seriously, when I put more make up on and wear something other than my “mommy uniform”, I feel like I can conquer something big

@Dahlia: I love that your doctor told you about it and I like the idea of intentionally walking the other days. I may have to do that. I love that your daughter does the work out with you, so sweet! I think I will have to try it with my girls too…it’s probably better for me to do it earlier rather than at 10pm with my hubby. Haha

@Megatherium: I just checked out their website. 5 moves sounds like something I can do

@808love: Ah one day I will have to work out in the morning. I remember that feeling and I know it makes the day start off so nice…but when I know that means giving up sleeping just a little more, it makes it so hard! My hubby once mentioned that I can work out early on Saturdays…and if I don’t have to wake up earlier than the kids…then there is definitely some incentive….maybe!

I can’t wait until my LO is old enough that I can do some cleaning up/dishes/etc. before he goes to bed. He’s 18 months and in the evening especially, super clingy and needy so we can’t do ANYTHING until he goes to bed. Luckily bedtime is pretty early, but I hate knowing that after I have to put him down, I have a pile of housework, dishes, laundry, lunches to pack, etc. to get to!

@MrsADS: I feel you! It took time for us to get to this place and it was only recently that our second got less clingy. Hopefully your time will come soon to enjoy the nights just a little bit more!
