Wonder Baby got her first tooth last week! Just in time to start Baby Led Weaning tomorrow on her six month birthday. She’s got another one pushing its way through, which is a fun addition to the wonder week and learning to be mobile stuff she’s got going on. We aren’t sleeping much. I can’t do much to help her learn to crawl forwards instead of backwards, but I can help with the teething. Here are some great ways to survive the joys of teething.
Teethers:
1) A teething necklace. If you babywear a lot, this is a great idea. Toddler Girl just chewed on my gold necklace, but I like the idea of this one a lot. I might buy it this week. It gives the baby something to chew on and fiddle with, which is also nice for nursing (Wonder Baby likes to grab my face while she nurses… not as fun). I’ve seen quite a few teething necklaces and I think this one is the cutest, although I don’t know if I’d wear it when I’m not babywearing.
2) This Bunny Teether looks pretty similar to the popular Ringley teether. Toddler Girl loved the Ringley, but it got really grody and then I stupidly tossed it in the wash. Don’t do that. The wood split and I was down a (borrowed) teether. This one is even cuter and looks like you could remove the fabric part to wash more easily.
3) Wonder Baby looooves this Wooden Elephant Teether. It’s really easy for her to hold and she loves to chew on it. I love that it’s all natural and adorable.
4) Sophie the Giraffe. I know, she’s everywhere. What can I say? There’s a reason! Both my girls chose her as a favourite thing to chew on, and I feel better about the natural rubber than I would about plastic. Even BPA free plastic makes me uneasy, as I don’t want my babies chewing on it for hours.
Painkillers:
4) Hyland’s Teething Tablets. Sometimes teething pain can go on for days at a time, and I don’t want to use drugs on a little baby all the time. Of all the homeopathic remedies I’ve tried, these are the only ones to have any effect. All my girlfriends swear by them. On a side note, they were recalled briefly in Canada (thankfully between my babies, so I didn’t miss them) but are proven safe and back on the shelves.
5) Infant Advil. I save the Advil for night time when they are in a lot of discomfort. It helps them sleep easier and seems to last longer than the Hyland’s tablets. I’ve heard that Advil is better for teeth pain than Tylenol, so that’s what I tend to use.
As an added note to breastfeeding mothers, yes my kids bite me when teething. I know this freaks a lot of mothers out, and many decide that they don’t want to nurse a baby with teeth. Just because your baby bites while teething does not mean that they will be biting you all the time when they have teeth! It’s just another little annoying thing about teething, and they will likely go back to being a happy little nurser once they pop that tooth. I haven’t found a great way to discourage the biting (although I stop the nursing session, as they are obviously not eating anymore), but I don’t think they usually mean to make a habit of it; it’s just that they hurt and are biting everything at that point. It sucks though, I can’t lie.

I agree with Sophie, hyland’s teething tablets, and advil. The only thing I would add is a baltic amber teething necklace from places like inspiredbyfinn.com. It won’t get rid of the pain but it does truly seem to dull the pain, which I’m all for because I hate constantly dosing my son with advil or tylenol when the pain is really bad.

I am terrified of bites when my baby starts teething. Does this happen for every tooth?

we gave charlie tons of hyland’s teething tablets, and they really seemed to help. but since the recall, i haven’t used them!
@Mrsbells: olive has 6 teeth and she’s bit me maybe 3 times total, and not super hard.

My son’s favorite item of all was and still is his hands. We tried Sophie (he was indifferent) and I really don’t give him pain relievers unless he’s running a fever, which is rare for him.

Love this list, especially the teething necklace.
@Mrsbells: Willa has 2 teeth and has chomped on me 4 times now (2 sessions) The first time didn’t hurt, but the two times this morning left my nipple throbbing. It’ll pass!

I’d love recommendations for teethers that are especially good for molars!

We had sophie, a wooden teether, the razberry, frozen towels, and a couple others, but LO chewed on everything but the teethers we bought her, lol. The only thing that helped was tylenol/ibuprofen.
I nursed through 17 mos and LO only bit me (lightly) 3 times. Each time, I just removed her and told her sternly “no biting”. Seemed to work.

I contacted the lady that makes the bunny teethers in no.2 and she confirmed that the bunny ears come off the wooden ring so you can wash them. Going to get one for my LO… they are so cute.

My pediatrician is not a fan of Hylands, he’s seen some bad reactions, so we are avoiding them. I know a majority of kids are just fine with them, but I would hate to have anything like that happen.
We found a Baltic amber teething necklace, while I can’t say 100% that it is working- he was a holy terror before we put it on, and I am too afraid to take it off! So we are continuing to use it.
I want to try out the Chewbeads, just waiting for a few weeks for the bank account to handle a splurge like that since we are also going on vacation this month.
I also love those mesh teething feeders- I put big ice chunks in it and he chews it down and no worry of choking. Also Mum Mums were recommended here earlier, he loves those too!

She has bit me three times today, and once hard. This tooth best come through tonight!
@Mrsbells: depends on your kid a lot! Toddler Girl was a screaming biting misery with some of her teeth, and some just popped up.
THEROO: by the time they get to molars I would feel fine with giving them a carrot or something to chew on, Toddler Girl didn’t really put toys in her mouth as much by that stage.

Thank you for the mention Mrs. Superhero :),
Check out http://www.ringley.ca for the new lineup of teethers! Most RiNGLEY products are now made with velcro so you can easily remove the wooden ring and throw the cloth in the washing machine! BE CaREFUL with imitation RiNGLEYs. The wood must be well sanded and well made and most importantly untreated so that its natural antibacterial properties can shine through. Maple wood is one of the strongest safest types of wood. Enjoy the journey, Shaindy
