I didn’t take monthly photos with Toddler Girl; I just took nice photos whenever she was in a good mood. This mostly worked out (except, unfortunately, for her 12 month where I didn’t do a decent shoot), but I wanted to do something more regular with Wonder Baby. I use Apple Cheeks diapers, and they come in so many fun colours, that I decided to do a rainbow! I blame the postpartum hormones for my craziness, as a couple of the colours I needed were tricky to get, but I’m loving the photos. Look at her grow!
If you are thinking of doing monthly photos, here are some tips from my experience:
– If possible, think it through while you’re still pregnant. I wish I had started with a newborn photo, they grow so much in that first month!
– Pick something simple so that it’s easy to do every month, even if you’re busy.
– Find the spot in your house with the best light, and shoot every photo there. Good light is more important than a nice chair or other props! The first 3 months it rained all the time, so even my good light wasn’t that bright. I stole the reflector from our car and stuck it behind her to help bounce some light back in. You can still tell that it got sunnier in the past couple months though.
– A toy is fun to have in the photo so that you have something to gauge the baby’s size against. It also gives them something to interact with, which can lead to some cute shots. Pick something special that you really love. Wonder Baby’s bunny was handmade by my close cousin.
– Frame the photo with enough space for the baby to grow. If you shoot from the same spot every month it will look nice to see the baby get bigger in the picture. I shot the first image with WB laying on the bed and me standing on it. I wish I had thought it through, because I needed to be further back for the next month. The rest of the images are shot with me standing on the bed, and her on the floor on the blanket. This was a bigger deal because I was shooting with a prime lens and couldn’t zoom out.
I think I have my work cut out for me to keep this up for 6 more months! I could not get her to lay on her back for more than about two seconds for last week’s photo, so maybe I’ll switch to have her sitting up.
Any of you doing monthly photos? Any tips for us?

ohmygosh she is soo cute! Look at all that hair! I’m so jealous!!! We take her monthly pics in front of a blue wall by the window in our living room. She’s always in her personalized rocking chair that the grandparents got her. I use the opportunity to dress her in the cute outfits she doesn’t get to wear day to day! I also use Melissa & Doug blocks to spell her name and how many months. I did remember to take a 1 week photo but opted not to do 2, 3 and 4 weeks.

Wonder Baby is such a cutie! I take similar weekly photos of my baby girl. Around 6 months it started becoming a two man operation. My husband is in charge of repositioning her, flipping her back over, catching her as she crawls away, etc, and I shoot the pictures. It’s definitely more of a challenge once they’re mobile! But it’s totally worth the effort.

I take a monthly photo of LO in the same 12 month onesie (it’s just a short sleeve one with blue and white stripes). I position his butt in the middle of a circle on his rug and always take the photo around 11 am so the lighting is the same and also that is when he wakes up so he is super happy!

I do monthly photos in the same outfit each month. I bought every size of the same sleep-n-play from Carters. The first month I wish I’d thought more about location before we started shooting, but we were all tired!

I love these! so cute
I wish I had thought more about it while pregnant. I knew I wanted to do something but had nothing planned, so being a tired mama I didn’t do anything. I just take pictures, but it’s not the same every month. I wish I did!

Adorable! And I have not even a little bit thought it through and am doing just what you said you did for toddler girl–just taking photos often and I guess I’ll compile them later. Oops.

I did monthly photos with my oldest with a Thomas the Tank Engine until he was 24 months and then started doing yearly photos on the same glider. So with our second, since he was born in the same season and can wear all of his big brother’s clothes, I am putting him the same outfit with Thomas and taking the same photos. It’s a great way to compare how different they are at the same age. My second one is definitely taller and as much as people say they look the same they actually don’t. But most brothers will look similar anyway which is probably why people think they look the same.

Great tips! I’ll add it to my “figure it out before the baby comes” list! I love that you can see the snaps on her diapers getting bigger, too!

What a cutie! I love the rainbow diapers idea!
We do weekly photos in a replica eames rocker. We love documenting how quickly our LO is growing and changing!

yes! we are doing monthly portraits too and the lady baby is now 7 months so I totally relate to the no-more-laying-down dliemma. for the last update she was sitting and crawling and whatnot…I definitely need to find a new location to shoot.
