When we first found out we were expecting Baby Blue, I immediately began thinking and researching nursery style and furniture. This was going to be the ultimate combination of my love of decor and projects and my overwhelming excitement about having a baby! I could just picture my little one snuggled into an adorable crib in a perfect nursery that would be worthy of any blog.
Then, we found out we were expecting not only Baby Blue but also Baby Blue Two. After the initial shock wore off, I knew I would need to adjust my thinking a bit when it came to my nursery plans. With one baby on the way, I was prepared to spend a little more, to splurge here and there, to make sure it was just as I envisioned and the perfect place for my little one to grow. With two on the way and double the daycare, diapers, furniture, and gear, I knew I needed to become a super-budget minded mama in a hurry. I stopped looking at Pottery Barn, Buy Buy Baby, and all my other favorite websites, and immediately started looking at my old friend, Ikea.
We live several hours from the closest Ikea, so last weekend we headed down to central Texas to spend a weekend with Mr. Blue’s family and to make an Ikea run. We knew that we would be getting two cribs, but we weren’t sure if we would purchase anything else. Alas, we walked out loaded down with boxes of furniture for Mr. Blue to assemble as his first big Daddy Project, and our bank account let out a huge sigh of relief. Here is our loot.
Ikea Hensvik crib
1. The Hensvik cribs ($99.00/each) with the Vyssa Vinka crib mattresses ($59.00/each). Mr. Blue really like the Hensvik crib and thought it had more personality than the other Ikea cribs. I slightly preferred a different one, but it made me feel really happy to get the one that “Daddy” chose. I think they’ll be super cute, and at $99.00 each I don’t have to feel guilty about spending a lot of money on a bed that will only be used for a short period of time. These also convert to toddler beds, so hopefully we’ll be able to use them until the Babies Blue are at least 3 or 4 years old.
2. The Hensvik cabinet with shelf unit ($69.00) – This matches the cribs, and we’ll use the bottom shelves to store toys and books that are little-hands friendly and the top shelves for other books and things that should be out of reach for a while.
3. Tarva 6-drawer chest ($149.000) – We decided that we did not want an official changing table because it would be used for such a short period of time. With that in mind, on our Ikea trip, we looked at dressers that would provide storage with a good surface to put a changing pad and supplies. We started looking at dressers that would match the color of the cribs and shelving unit, but then Mr. Blue found this unfinished pine chest. Naturally, he was thinking we could use it as is. I immediately conjured up a way to make it perfect in the nursery, the piece that would be my touch in the room, which will not in anyway leave it in its “natural” state. So, we bought it and my mind is now working on my plans for this piece. I can’t wait to get my hands on it! The great thing about this piece for us is that it will grow with the twins, giving each of them three drawers to use for their clothes.
So, that brings us to a grand total of $580.00 for almost all of our twin nursery furniture!
What nursery furniture did you purchase?

That furniture is beautiful!
I bought the majority of LO’s furniture at antique stores, it was all refurbished. It was all inexpensive and I brought a friend who is good at haggling so I got it for even cheaper

Great purchases! We were able to plan a nursery for our little one with all existing furniture (dresser), hand-me-down furniture (glider), and gifted furniture (crib and changing table). The only thing new we bought was the Ikea Expedit bookshelf!

Wow. We got a crib for free, a changing table for $20. The most money went to a recliner/sofa set and it’s totally worth it!! It’s so comfortable for the night feedings. We got some shelves from Target b/c we received giftcards for there and it helped out SOO much!!
Good luck with your twins!!! After having our daughter, my husband and I talked about how it would have been with twins and we just gave each other a bewildered look.

I’ve never seen that crib before at Ikea Can’t wait to see what the nursery looks like when you’re done with it.
We also purchased an Ikea crib (the sniglar fro $70– everyone hated it at first, but it really works well in our home, and I love how simple it is. Baby’s room has a bit of a natural theme, so the unfinished wood works really well for us).
We actually converted the guest-bed into a day bed, and that’s where we spend a lot of time reading (and feeding!). We do have an Eames inspired rocker, but we don’t keep it in the nursery anymore because I prefer to feed lying down on the bed anyway.
We also made our own shelves, and book ledges. Baby’s room has proven to be one big DIY project!

Oh, and we never even bought a changing pad. We’ve always just used a portable changing pad (I think ours is Skip-Hop?), so we just changed the baby wherever.

Great deals. We used an existing dresser and also use it for our changing table, used existing artwork and were gifted our crib and rocker/glider.

Congrats on twins! Ours are two this month. They are a privilege and a trial. We have two girls who share a room. They have two 4-drawer dressers. One with current clothes that they share and another in the closet for upcoming and just-grown-out-of clothing. That way I don’t do big sorting sessions, just move it to the other dresser and bundle up as the drawer fills. We used a dresser as a changing table and still do. We have a shelf mounted above that has their diaper supplies and white noise machine, the monitor and a small lamp. LOVE that set up as it is close at hand for us, but WAY out of reach for he girls. Best of luck! Take lots of photos and video because the first part is a blur. Oh! And don’t turn down any offers of help.

Great finds! We love our Ikea dresser/changing table. Our Naturepedic changing pad came with a strap that you screw into the back of the dresser so it stays in place. Works like a charm!
