When we first found out we were expecting Baby Blue, I immediately began thinking and researching nursery style and furniture.  This was going to be the ultimate combination of my love of decor and projects and my overwhelming excitement about having a baby!  I could just picture my little one snuggled into an adorable crib in a perfect nursery that would be worthy of any blog.

Then, we found out we were expecting not only Baby Blue but also Baby Blue Two.  After the initial shock wore off, I knew I would need to adjust my thinking a bit when it came to my nursery plans.  With one baby on the way, I was prepared to spend a little more, to splurge here and there, to make sure it was just as I envisioned and the perfect place for my little one to grow.  With two on the way and double the daycare, diapers, furniture, and gear, I knew I needed to become a super-budget minded mama in a hurry.  I stopped looking at Pottery Barn, Buy Buy Baby, and all my other favorite websites, and immediately started looking at my old friend, Ikea.

We live several hours from the closest Ikea, so last weekend we headed down to central Texas to spend a weekend with Mr. Blue’s family and to make an Ikea run.  We knew that we would be getting two cribs, but we weren’t sure if we would purchase anything else.  Alas, we walked out loaded down with boxes of furniture for Mr. Blue to assemble as his first big Daddy Project, and our bank account let out a huge sigh of relief.  Here is our loot.

Ikea Hensvik crib

1.  The Hensvik cribs ($99.00/each) with the Vyssa Vinka crib mattresses ($59.00/each). Mr. Blue really like the Hensvik crib and thought it had more personality than the other Ikea cribs.  I slightly preferred a different one, but it made me feel really happy to get the one that “Daddy” chose.  I think they’ll be super cute, and at $99.00 each I don’t have to feel guilty about spending a lot of money on a bed that will only be used for a short period of time.  These also convert to toddler beds, so hopefully we’ll be able to use them until the Babies Blue are at least 3 or 4 years old.

Hensvik cabinet

2.  The Hensvik cabinet with shelf unit ($69.00) – This matches the cribs, and we’ll use the bottom shelves to store toys and books that are little-hands friendly and the top shelves for other books and things that should be out of reach for a while.

Tarva chest of drawers

3.  Tarva 6-drawer chest ($149.000) – We decided that we did not want an official changing table because it would be used for such a short period of time.  With that in mind, on our Ikea trip, we looked at dressers that would provide storage with a good surface to put a changing pad and supplies.  We started looking at dressers that would match the color of the cribs and shelving unit, but then Mr. Blue found this unfinished pine chest.  Naturally, he was thinking we could use it as is. I immediately conjured up a way to make it perfect in the nursery, the piece that would be my touch in the room, which will not in anyway leave it in its “natural” state.  So, we bought it and my mind is now working on my plans for this piece.  I can’t wait to get my hands on it!  The great thing about this piece for us is that it will grow with the twins, giving each of them three drawers to use for their clothes.

So, that brings us to a grand total of $580.00 for almost all of our twin nursery furniture!
