I will admit as a stay-at-home-mom, my wardrobe is pretty basic: yoga pants and old t-shirts from college parties. Shameful really! (I promise I’m working on it). Still, as a nursing mom I do have a few go-to items for those days when I have occasion to put my best foot forward:
1) 2 everyday bras. I love this Bravado Seamless Nursing bra. It offers enough support that I don’t feel naked wearing it, and it also leaves me accessible to nurse pretty much everywhere. It doesn’t offer tons of support so I would wear it only to run errands.
2) 2 underwire bras. I know La Leche says not to wear underwire bras while nursing. And it is true, underwires are very uncomfortable and sometimes make it difficult to nurse. But I feel awkward going wire-free at work and social functions, and at family gatherings. Wearing an underwire bra makes me feel like my pre-pregnancy self. I don’t wear it every day, but I do when I want to look put-together. This bra isn’t the best for nursing in public since it is very structured and is difficult to pull down, so I only wear it when I think I’ll have somewhere private to nurse so I can get comfy.
3) 3 pull-down shirts – These lightweight shirts are perfect. I prefer the pull-down function to shirts that un-snap; pull-down shirts allow you to get ready to nurse in one fluid motion. These shirts have extra volume in the stomach to accommodate postpartum tummy bulk, but are fitted enough in the bust that they still look trim if you wear them after you’ve lost some of the pregnancy weight. They are ideal for layering under cardigans, which gives you an extra layer of privacy.
4) 2 oxford shirts: Pick these up at a thrift store; I prefer oversized so I can layer or belt them. Plus my chest seems to expand and contract during the day depending on when I’ve last nursed, so a little extra room is good!
5) 3 sleep bras. I hate wearing a bra to sleep so I mostly go bra-less now, but in the early (leaky!) days I wore one of these most nights. These don’t offer much support at all so they are really only good for providing a barrier between yourself and an outer layer of clothing.
6) A black skirt: This may seem like an odd thing to put on a nursing wardrobe list, but hear me out. If you have to dress up regularly, you’ll want something basic to pair with tops. I have lost enough weight that I can fit into my pre-pregnancy dresses (ok, some of them!) but have no use for them because I would have to take them completely off in order to nurse!
7) 2 oversized cardigan sweaters. This is my absolute must-have item. Scribble hates nursing covers so I use these as an alternative. I happen to have two that I purchased before becoming pregnant that have large cowl-shaped collars. I can pull the collar over Scribble and nurse discreetly without having a giant wall of fabric between him and myself.
What are some of your essentials in your nursing wardrobe?

I need to start picking up some nursing friendly apparel, so this post comes at a perfect time!

I got some Undercover Mama tanks that I love! I can wear normal pre-preg shirts (as long as they are roomy enough in the chest) and just pull them up without worrying about exposing my stomach, and they clip onto a nursing bra so give more support than a tank on its own.

I loooove that sweater! So beautiful! I want it.
I wore a ton of button up shirts in the beginning. I usually always wore a nursing tank top underneath all my shorts as well, especially if they were able to pull down.
I also shopped for some dresses (since I had DS end of February, we were approaching summer) that were easy to pull down or had elastic/jersey necklines. I found a great tunic style one from motherhood that also doubled as maternity wear- score!
Nursing bras are a must, I wish I hadn’t waited so long to get some good ones. I started out with bras that had no wore/support from target and they worked while my boobs adjusted sizes, but after awhile I hated them. I just bought a cake lingerie bra and I don’t know why I waited 9 months! I have a hot milk one on its way too!

Love this. Nursing bras are a necessity in my book! I have day time ones, and those exact night time ones, which I love and highly recommend
I found them at Target for very reasonable.

I got three Majamas Easy Bras when PB was new and they’re great. They work as nighttime or hanging-around at home bras. Easy access, some support, suuuuper comfy, and they’ve held up to many many washes.

I loved maternity tanks I got from Target. For nursing they were easy to pull down from the top and my stomach stayed covered.

Great timing! I was thinking that it would be a good idea to pick up a few more items before this weekend, so this was perfect! Like you, underwires are a must for me, with just one or two non-underwired bras. Thanks so much!

Thrifting some oxford shirts is such a great idea! Definitely doing this. Thanks!

I love the undercover mamas. Nursing tanks don’t have enough support for my big ladies, so this lets me stay warm and covered in the tummy while I lift my top shirt to nurse. Or I just wear a cardigan over them.

Ladies with, ahem, bigger busts- HotMilk bras are my FAVORITE. They pick everything up high and are easy to nurse in, and at 36G I really appreciate that. Also Undercover Mamas didn’t fit my bust so I get the cheapy stretch camisoles from Wet Seal and lengthen the elastic straps allll the way. They can be pulled down easily, and I use them as an undershirt with any old top that I can lift, pull, or open.

I wore those sleep bras out when I was leaking all over the place. Now I sleep topless or with a regular tank on just to keep the rub down. They were wonderful when I needed them, though! I also wear bra #1 every.single.day. They were worth every expensive penny.
If I know we’re going to be out and about, I try to wear a nursing tank under my shirt so if I nurse her, I don’t flash the world my back fat when I pull my shirt up. I have never been a fan of oxford shirts or the shirts that pull down, unfortunately.
Dresses are just OUT until I’m done nursing. End of story.

Bravado nursing tanks! They are so much better than the cheap ones from target. They are really supportive (even in size 40 D/E). I can wear one under a regular shirt instead of a bra and it helps hide my pp belly.

I love the Bravado Bra! I have two and they are all I wear. I’m probably a 36 DD right now (used to be 34 C) and it offers me plenty of support. I wear a Medium. It also doesn’t look like a sports bra or tank under clothes….it has pads so you still have some shape.
