Before we could start thinking about Sienna’s nursery, I needed to think about what we wanted to do for Mavrick’s toddler room. Because our son was moving into our bedroom and we were moving downstairs, there was too much space for a little 2 year old toddler. So we decided to divide it into half bedroom, half playroom.
These are some rooms we’ve used as inspiration for Mavrick’s new room:
We already had his bed, a vintage dresser we refurbished, bedding, a carpet and we purchased an expedit bookcase which we will use to divide the room and play area. But colors, furniture placement and what I would like to have in both spaces wasn’t easy to decide.
We have a combination of white wood furniture and grey bedding so that was the base. I was thinking of adding some blues to make it more of a boy’s room because I didn’t want a classic theme like cars or planes, and rather a room that could grow with Mavrick. I like the idea of mixing vintage elements like maps with more modern pieces. I think that’s what makes a room unique and have its own character.
One thing I do know is that I want to make a reading area in Mavrick’s room space. A playroom isn’t necessarily a peaceful area, and I also want both kids to have their own reading area in their rooms. I’m trying to avoid any fights ahead of time.
I like the idea of a carpet and lots of pillows to make the space cocoonish, and a nice display area for the books.
The play area will be for both Mavrick and Sienna, so I want it to accommodate both of them. I was thinking of having a music area, a kitchen area, and a car/truck area all with their respective storage space. Plus, we will have some storage in the bookcase we purchased. We thought of lining it with a curtain as a backing to the cubbies, so that it creates a wall when you are on the room side. We want to avoid Mavrick grabbing toys when bed means sleep time. Only books will be allowed in his room.
What does your toddler’s room look like? Do you have a play area and a sleep area?

Oh, I love these inspiration rooms! We never really had a traditional nursery, so when we went to “pre-school” room… it was a swapping of the crib to a bed (and bedding, obviously) And swapping out some decor, etc. Now you make me want to re-do the whole thing!

@Mrs. Paintbrush: Well for what its worth, the whole reason we ended up painting and redoing the room was because he was changing space all together. Otherwise I would of done the same, swap crib for bed and swap decor

We won’t really have a separate room for D once he transitions out of the crib – we’ll just change the furniture out. But I just wanted to comment that that Ferris wheel is BANANAS. So awesome.

I love that first room – the gray one! So sophisticated yet still “little man”. I also LOVE the explorer room. If I could go back and redo it, I would have done a world maps/explorer/globes room for my son! maybe for his toddler room once he’s out of his crib.

I also LOVE that first room! I actually have a onesie 3-piece set that would match perfectly with that room, haha.
You are so crafty and creative… I can’t wait to see what you’ve done with Mavrick’s room!
We only allow books in Noelle’s room too.
