If you’ve followed my blog, Somewhere Splendid, for any period of time, it’s pretty easy to pick up the fact that my husband and I are super into a mid-century meets modern look. I often get asked by stylists I work with what the house I grew up in looked like, because they’re curious to see how my parents’ style influenced my own. The answer? Not at all. My parents’ place is an eclectic mix of classic, shabby chic, Mediterranean, and colonial decorating styles peppered with an occasional piece of Judaica and an Aboriginal mask. Confused? Yeah, that’s because it is. Yet, somehow, it comes together and works; I also think, in its own odd way, it reflects who they are as a couple and as individuals.
If there’s any style that stands out as my mom’s signature among others, it’s definitely her love of all things shabby chic. I thought that today I’d switch things up a bit and design a nursery that is pretty far from my personal taste, and create a nursery that I’d imagine she would have liked to see put together when I was born – so I dedicate this to her. (Yeah, I’m in that sentimental nesting phase of my pregnancy. Call it gratitude for the multiple boxes of cute little girl clothes she’s been sending us lately!) Added bonus: the color palette is gearing me up for spring, which is perfect since I’m ready for this Minnesotan winter to be over!
