Today’s nursery is inspired by a reader request. Here’s what Kelly, the momma-to-be, said:
My husband and I are expecting our first baby in June. We’re so thrilled and have decided not to find out the gender. We both love surprises so much and this is (in our opinion) the ultimate life surprise. We’re liking navy, dark yellow and white for nursery colors, so I thought I’d see what you might come up with for that scheme. We’re very practical and minimal people. I don’t like a lot of knick knacks, but do like pattern, texture, etc. If you have time, I’d love to see a nursery inspiration board with those colors.
I took the navy and yellow palette as a starting point and paired it with a silvery gray and a turquoise to brighten up the palette a bit and give it some more punch. Rather than go for a lot of quirky decor since Kelly and her husband are minimal people, I went for a lot of interesting pattern on the different staple design elements to add some interest. Pairing bolder patterns (like stripes) and solids against more complex patterns helps keep everything from feeling too busy. I love the wallpaper in this room too, which reads more like texture than pattern and adds another dimension to the more minimal look.
Hope you like it, Kelly, and congratulations!

Completely beautiful! And, a big thank-you for showing the palette and inspiration board without describing it in gender-based terms (i.e. “would work for a boy or a girl”); since, of course, ANY colors work well for a boy or a girl.
Great job, and thanks for the links to all the pretty things.

Thats exactly the wallpaper we’ve chosen for our nursery! Our baby is also due in June and we don’t know the sex either! I love this board, thank you!
