I have never heard of Bento lunches before HelloBee, these are all unreal, and something to think about when LO is older!

Wow, all these LOs eat better than I do!

This is wonderful having all of these in the same place! I never would have thought to do Bentos before my daughter started eating solids. Now I see the purpose of them and she’s only 9 months old! Can’t wait to use more of these ideas as she gets older.

thanks for more food inspiration! @mrsbee : our daughters are pretty close in age. does she usually eat the entire meal? i feel like i feed my LO half of those portions, so i’m wondering if i should start preparing more. she seems okay once we’re done, but perhaps she’d eat more if it was in front of her.

These are awesome! I bought a few supplies today. Hopefully, the new supplies will inspire me to get creative and the pretty presentation will inspire LO to eat creatively

@mrsvivian: olive usually leaves more than half her lunch. she’s been eating pretty well this week though. in the lunch above, she ate most of the egg, all the peas, all the fruit, and almost all the chicken porridge. she didn’t eat the spaghetti squash or pizza.
she always finishes her fruit — she’s a fruitatarian!

@anbanan15: @Sarah Crowder: @Mrs. Pen: @ohapostrophe: thanks! I actually didn’t realize i made a rainbow bento until i was putting it together! The beet pancake recipe is from weelicious http://weelicious.com/2011/06/28/red-beet-pancakes/
It is adapted from Kim Boyce’s Good to the Grain recipe which uses quinoa flour. I used whole wheat flour entirely because that’s all i had on hand, and did a buttermilk-milk mix which translated into very moist pancakes! I had to be careful about not burning the pancakes because of the high sugar content from the beets.

@Freckles: Thank you for the link and also for mentioning where it was adapted from…we actually have to switch all the flour (and a few other things) out for quinoa so that’s perfect :).

@Teachermama: I got mine from Pick Your Plum! Def the best price. If you’re in no rush I would wait till the next time they have them!
LOVE seeing all the bentos! All our babies are such great little eaters!

@anbanan15: here is a link to the original recipe: http://acozykitchen.com/quinoa-and-beet-pancakes/ not sure if you can sub all of it out (i may do spelt) without compromising the texture but i am sure it will still taste good.

I’m just geeked we made it on the blog post! lol! Awesome work guys
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Mrs. Stroller: I meant to ask on the boards. How do you freeze dry your fruits?
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
@regberadaisy: they’re from Trader Joe’s. I got them because they’re hard, but dissolve pretty quickly so they seem to help with molar teething
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
@anbanan15: I made GF beet pancakes last night using oatmeal blended to a powder in place of the flours in a beet pancake recipe on Weelicious. I added chia and flax too.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@Mrs. Stroller: @Freckles: Thanks! We do make a 4 ingredient waffle using quinoa flour so it might be able to work! I just have to sub ALL the wet ingredients and a few other things lol. Oat flour is also not an option. I wish i was just as simple as being GF
honeydew / 7444 posts
@Mrs. Stroller: hehe, that’s exactly where i got my recipe!
@anbanan15: recipes must be a challenge with a mspi baby! You rock in my books!
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
@anbanan15: Is quinoa flour something you make or do you buy it in a flour-like form?
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
So inspirational and so many great ideas, thank you!
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@Mrs. Stroller: I usually make it but you can buy it. Ancient Harvest brand is the safest in terms or staying away from crosscontaminents and Bob’s Red Mill also sells it. To make it it tastes a little better, less bitter since the whole seeds hbe been washes more removing more saponins. Milling your own works best in a coffee grinder or Vitamix with a dry blade. If you buy I usually bake the flour at a low temperature for 3 hours to cut out some of the bitterness.

How old were your LO’s when they started using utensils (including the bento box as a plate)? My daughter is 14.5 months and just uses her hands/eats off her tray. I started using bowl/plate but 5 minutes in she’ll pick it up and try to shovel all food into her mouth! We also spoon feed her any soupy things, including yogurt…
honeydew / 7968 posts
These all look fantastic! It inspires me to start cooking more variety for my kids! What would be great is not only the bentos, but recipes that go along w it so if it looks good, we’d know how to make it….

@lisa – we started around 12 months but she was a food thrower then. she started daycare at 16 months and has been fine eating from a bento daily there.
i just discovered today that olive can feed herself soup with those chinese soup spoons!
