Liam turned one on Saturday! I’ll post pictures of the party soon (it was so much fun), but I wanted to share how we handled gifts for our little one year old.
We live in a pretty small house with limited closet space. We knew that no matter how much we tried to keep Liam’s first birthday party small, we were going to have lots of family and friends who wanted to celebrate with him, and rightfully so. However, we also knew that if everyone brought a gift for the birthday boy, we wouldn’t be able to fit everything in our house. Plus, he has everything he needs (and then some), so we first decided that we would ask people not to bring gifts to the party.
After hearing from some other moms who went the “no gifts” route and that 99% of poeple brought gifts anyway (and the 1% who didn’t felt bad seeing that everyone else did), we tried to think of another way to limit the extra stuff but still allow people to bring something. I thought that we could ask for donations instead. After doing some research, we decided to ask for new unwrapped toys, clothes, and books to donate to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. We included an insert with the invitation so people had some ideas of things the kids that were around Liam’s age in the hospital really needed (things they could wear or play with in bed were of high priority), and asked that everyone bring a card so Liam could send a thank you note on their behalf.
A few people still brought gifts for Liam, but everyone was very generous and we had four big bags to take to the hospital for the kids! Liam had no idea what was going on, of course, but I look forward to telling him about it one day when he will understand. Here he is with all his donations (in his cute little shirt and tie).
For the health of the patients, we weren’t allowed to distribute the gifts to them, but I snapped this picture of Liam in the lobby of the hospital after we unloaded the goods. He seems happy to be giving back in his own way!

What an absolutely wonderful idea! I love that your guests were so generous and you were able to make an awesome contribution to the hospital. Definitely an idea for us to consider doing with our LO!

Beautiful way to incorporate giving with your friends and family. Would you mind posting the American invite and insert so we can all take a look at the wording?
Liam looked so cute in his tie!

Liam is so so so cute and I think it’s so wonderful that you asked guests to bring gifts for the patients at the Children’s Hospital. Amazing.

That’s a really neat idea. I have a friend who dealt with the massive influx of toys by donating the same amount of old toys that her child received. She had her child help choose them and deliver them.

Love it!! Especially because places like hospitals can’t always take used toys, so going the “one in, one out” route doesn’t work well for donations like this. You must have some great friends that they were so generous, too!

I love this idea and also really don’t want people to bring gifts for my LO. Maybe I will ask for donations instead, for the same reasons you described. Thanks for the idea!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! Wish I would’ve thought of doing something like this b/c we’re in the same position! Oh well… maybe next year! =)

Love this idea! We too asked for no gifts or to contribute to Leah’s 529. About half of the people still brought gifts and I went around and returned it all to the different stores. I’m totally going to do this for her 2nd bday! Thank you!

Such a nice way to let people bring gifts/still get them out of your house/donate to a worthy cause. Win win win.

Curious. How did you word the invitation so that people knew you’d like donations for the hospital instead of presents for Liam?

@pregnantbee: I included an insert that said something like “In leiu of gifts, Liam is asking for new unwrapped toys, books, and clothes to donate to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles” and I listed items that they requested on their website. When I post the party pictures, I’ll include the invitation and insert.

@tequiero21: How funny! I knew they were close in age, but I didn’t know they had the same birthday!

@mrs. tictactoe: Perfect. Thanks! We’re just doing a nicer email invite, so I can stick that wording in the body.
