We have a couple family trips planned in the next few months that involve flying. We fly about once a year so the activities that occupy the kids change every time we fly. Our first trip will be about 4.5 hours out to the Pacific Northwest (a first time for all of us) and I am especially excited. The part of the trip I probably dread the most is the plane ride so I am always looking for fun and engaging activities to keep my toddler and preschooler busy. Here are some activities that my kids would certainly enjoy.
1) Gel pens – Lil’ Pizza has been obsessed with her gel pens and uses them daily for writing letters, coloring, and drawing. I like to keep them in a pencil case so it’s easier for travel.
2) Audiobooks – Lil’ Pizza loves listening to audiobooks and it is something I have been so thankful to have discovered with her. Sometimes it keeps her occupied and quiet for over an hour! I usually borrow from my local library through the Hoopla app. I will probably also bring a few books on the plane for her that she has memorized and can “read” on her own.
3) Stained Glass Made Easy Activity Kit – Lil’ Pizza got something similar to this craft for her birthday and it kept her focused until she was able to complete it It’s a three-step process for each sticker; 1) locate the number and shape on the sticker key, 2) locate that actual sticker on the sticker sheet, and 3) place the sticker on the picture. It is recommended for children 5 years and older, so it could be frustrating for some children. There are similar stained glass stickers with two steps but Lil’ Pizza went through this one much faster.
4) Coloring book – Lil’ Pizza is perfectly fine with using her gel pens on a blank notebook but this coloring book is so cute. She has improved staying in the lines and loves to make things more colorful these days, so I think she would have a lot of fun with this coloring book.
5) How to Draw book – Last week, I showed her how to draw a few animals by teaching her in a few simple steps just like this book. She was so proud that she was able to draw some of the animals the same way that I did. I think she would absolutely love this book to practice her drawing.
6) Puffy Sticker Set with Reusable Stickers – Lil’ Pizza loves this Melissa and Doug Reusable Sticker Activity Pad but it’s a bit large to take on the plane. This other sticker pad by Melissa and Doug seems just as fun and much more portable.
Activities for my 21 month old toddler
7) Funny Animal Magnet Faces – I was trying to find magnets that came in a travel container and were larger pieces that Lil’ Pizza would enjoy and came across this one. I think both the girls would have fun playing together with this one.
8) Triangular Crayons – Crayons that won’t roll off the trays? Yes, please.
9) Board book – Baby Pizza’s language skills have really grown in the last couple months and she has also been obsessed with books lately. I plan to take this book with us because she enjoys “reading” this book and pointing at all the different pictures. I will also have a few extra books for our trip that both Lil’ Pizza and Baby Pizza enjoy me reading to them before putting them to bed.
10) Scribbling pages and stickers – Baby Pizza just needs paper and a few crayons to keep her busy for a little while but I like that this scribbling book also comes with some stickers she could put on the pages.
11) Wow! Water-Reveal Activity Pad – Both girls are always delighted to see the pages change into colorful pictures.
. . . . .
What are your favorite activities to take for your toddler and preschooler to keep them occupied on the plane ride?

Can you use Hoopla without wifi? Are you paying for wifi on a plane? I thought you couldn’t download with Hoopla. My library also has Overdrive which you can download. It’s more book intensive than Hoopla which I find to be more movie intensive.
Also, if you have Amazon Prime it’s a wonderful source of free downloadable tv shows for kids. There’s a limit but it’s very generous, enough to keep my son occupied for a full day.

@claire: I know I can download from Hoopla to my device. I’m a bit tech- challenged so I just have to figure out where it goes on my iPhone I think?

I just heard of this game called Last Mouse Lost and it’s basically a silicone disk with bubbles that pop. There’s instructions for a game version, but I saw that little toddlers enjoy just popping it! They used it on a plane and it kept their 19 month old entertained for the whole time!

I am always on the look out for small, packable items to bring to either restaurants or for travelling, so this is great.
The stained glass sticker puzzles are great, I stumbled upon the Paint By Sticker series and my son and I love to do those together. The pieces are small though, but could be great to grow into.
I also like to bring a deck of cards, my son loves UNO, so that’s always in my bag too.

This is going to be very helpful in the Cereal household. We have two upcoming trips planned, and I am pretty anxious about how we will keep the littles entertained on the plane. Thanks!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: you intrigued me so I checked out reviews on Amazon and one review described it like “quiet reusable bubble wrap”….I can already picture my daughter doing this for a long time! It’s in the cart! It also seems like a great simple and small game to have in your bag for your older kids:)

@looch: I was thinking about a card game too but I was trying to find activities that my 4 year old would be able to do more independently:). I should teach her how to play UNO though…such a good game!

@Mrs. Cereal: Good luck with your upcoming trips! The 100 words book also has a sticker book that I’ve seen that I think both girls would like. I forgot to mention it in the post.

These are all great tips – we use many of them when traveling. Others I would add to the list that I didn’t see are a doodle pad and the color wonder markers and pages. My 2.5 year old loved using them both on a recent flight, and they also still entertain our older one too!

@amanda: ooh yes, how could I forget! Those two things are great and definitely should be added to this list! I have a boogie board that Lil’ Pizza likes, so I am thinking of bringing that because I don’t have a smaller doodle pad.

One of my 3 yr old’s favorite trip activities is usong washi tape. I give him one or two colors and a blank sketch pad and he loves being able to use the tape and make designs. Keeps him busy for a while. We also bring a small amt of magnatiles or bristle blocks since they easily stick together and aren’t too messy.

@shessler: That sounds like a fun idea! I’ll have to see what I have around the house. Thanks for the suggestion.

Even without a board, there are fun games to play in the car with your kids. Yes, you grownups must participate as well. This is, after all, a family trip. Here are a few ideas for your next trip.
Story Telling is my favorite – One family member starts a story. Each family member will then add a sentence to the story to help fill in the details. You will see just how great of an imagination kids can have through this game.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: So we just came back from our trip…and I did end up buying that game. It’s seriously such a good investment! She was playing with it on her own for about 30 min straight but that was still pretty good. She went back to it again later.

@Mrs. Pizza: awesome! That’s so good to hear.
