I’m a huge fan of not spending a ton on maternity clothes since their life span is so limited. Through both of my pregnancies, I stocked up on maternity basics: tees, tanks, a few pants and maybe a dress or skirt. I focused more on finding ways to either make my existing closet items work, or buying new items that could be worn well after baby was sleeping in my arms.
So these are some of my favorite seasonal non-maternity items that can be worn before, after and during pregnancy. Since it’s currently summer, here are my 5 favorite summer picks:
Stretchy Maxi Dress – This was one of my favorite items. If the dress is stretchy enough, it will look adorable (and be super comfy) while you sport that cute bump, and then stretch back and be equally as cute and comfy post-baby and beyond. Keeping the pattern timeless will help extend the life as well. (Black & White Striped Maxi via ASOS – Blue Striped Maxi via The Gap)
Vest – Personally I wasn’t a fan of having a bare back while pregnant. I know it’s a pretty normal and regular thing for many pregnant women to get pregnancy back-ne (back acne). For me it was something I liked to keep covered up, so little vests over tanks or strappy dresses were my go to. A little crochet vest would look cute over most any dress or basic tank, and the jean vest adds an easy casual touch to any outfit. (Denim Vest via TOPSHOP – Crochet Vest via Aeropostale)
Square Scarf – Wear it over a basic tee and tank and you have an instant outfit. It’s also great when the day is a tiny bit chilly. My most favorite use for the square scarf after baby (than wearing it around my neck of course) is using it as a nursing cover in a snap. (Paisley Scarf via The Gap)
Skinny Belt – Easily add a touch of style to a basic top, some added interest to a dress, or help accentuate a cute baby bump. Just a great investment with endless uses. (Leopard Belt via ASOS – Cobalt Patent Leather Belt via ASOS)
Statement Cardigan – Depending on where you live, even though it’s summer it might still get chilly at night or maybe on random days. Why not stock up on cute cardigans you can wear into the fall while pushing a stroller? Cute over just about anything, add a skinny belt over top to show off that belly a little more. (Striped Cardigan via Madewell – Seagull Cardigan via Madewell)

I didn’t buy many maternity pieces either. I had a lot of flowy tops and cardigans that I wore throughout my pregnancy.

I had to buy quite a few maternity dresses due to my dress code at work and my normal stuff not fitting, but luckily casual clothes & pants were lended to me by my sister so it evened out in the end. I spent more (well my mom since she generously bought me most of my pieces) then I would haev liked, but didn’t really have an option. I do like to buy cotton t-shirts from Victoria Secret’s PINK line. They are extra long and were a favorite before pregnancy. They usually have them on sale for 2 for 40, love them!
