Charlie was very easy to potty train at 2 1/2, and we probably could have trained him much earlier. I always assumed that girls would be much easier to train, but Olive is now almost 3 and though she likes sitting on the potty, she doesn’t like using it. We were waiting for the magical day when she would really start showing interest, but it hasn’t arrived yet. If we’ve learned one thing about her, it’s that she does things in her own time (and she’s a stubborn honey badger!). We’re probably going to have to buckle down and try the 3-day approach.
We’ve read a lot of potty training books over the years (the library is a really great place to check out a bunch), and Olive really enjoys them. These are our favorites:
Princess of the Potty/Prince of the Potty – This is the book we used for Charlie, and I like that the story and illustrations are clear, and it is very thorough covering how to use the potty, accidents, washing hands, and more. As far as a comprehensive how to, I think this is one of the best potty books.
Potty – My kids are huge fans of Leslie Patricelli’s books and this one is no exception. It’s simple, cute, funny, and is the perfect book for introducing the idea of the potty to toddlers.
Underwear Do’s and Don’ts – Todd Parr’s books are always bright and funny. Though this isn’t a potty training book, I think it’s a great read about how funny and awesome underwear are, and both my kids think this book is utterly hilarious. They use the “do… don’t” phrase now in everyday life all the time.
Princess Potty – I’m not a princess and pink kind of girl, but Olive is increasingly infatuated with that girly world. If you have a little girl that loves pink and all things princesses, she will probably love this book too. The book also comes with a crown for your child to wear, and sticker jewels for each time she uses the potty. To say Olive loves this book would be an understatement!

Thanks to you, I was able to get my first son fully potty trained (no nap/night time diaper) at 2.5 years old using Prince of the Potty. He also did watch Elmo Potty Time but we always read Price of the Potty when he was sitting on the toilet. Now my second son who will be 2 soon…I just don’t see it happening until after he’s three!

The Potty Book for Girls. She LOVES it and quoted it many, many times during potty training. She has been using the potty for a couple months now and still reads it. She calls it her “Hannah book” because that’s the little girl’s name.

“Going to the Potty,” by Mr. Rogers, remains a big favorite even though it’s undies most of the time now…I think she loves the real pictures and long explanations.
