I did a significant paring down of my diaper bag recently after a too-heavy bag was leaving me with an aching back. My new system is to keep everything I need for an outing with Little M in a Petunia Pickle Bottom clutch-style bag that I can stick inside of my everyday purse when we’re out and about together. When I’m out without him I can take the clutch out, leave it at home or in the car and just carry a nearly-empty purse.
Here’s what I’m carrying right now in my PPB clutch:
- Changing pad – I don’t use the one that came with the PPB clutch since it’s a little bulky
- Diaper – I carry a disposable in my bag even though we cloth diaper, but I do have an extra cloth diap in the car
- Wipes – I use these all the time to wipe down toys, carts, hands and bums
- Little waste baggies
- Hand sanitizer
- Paci – even though we only use pacis in the car and crib I have one in my bag as my own little security blanket in case of toddler meltdown
- Smoothie pouch – an emergency snack for Little M
- Luna bar – an emergency snack for mummy
- Straw – Little M can drink anything from a straw
- Fold-up bib – ours is like this one
- Lip balm for me
- Little case with Advil and a tampon for me
- Pocket sling for baby wearing on the go
And in my purse I carry:
- Wallet
- Lipstick
- Face powder
- Earphones
- Hair clip
- Business cards
- Phone
I was skeptical when my girlfriends told me I’d need to carry less as my baby got older, but in our case it’s true. Did you diaper bag get smaller and lighter as your baby got older?

By 12m, I would just keep the diaper bag in the car and throw a diaper/wipes in my purse for most trips. I like the idea of having a smaller bag to put in my purse rather than carrying two bags.

I have got to stop over packing H’s bag. He’s 16 months. He doesn’t need everything I pack him! Thank you for reminding me that less is better in some cases (like diaper bags and back pain!)

I definitely carry less. I actually don’t even take a diaper bag with me in stores anymore. Nothing is ever so urgent that I can’t just run to the car really quickly. I do usually have a couple of snacks in my purse and I’m usually fine with just that and changing a diaper in the back of my SUV before leaving the store.

I’m going to come back to this when I go back into the land of diaper bag carrying! You seem to have the basics, without being unprepared! And no, my bag got heavier. Each kid thing I took out, I replaced with camera gear.
