My sister in law recently announced her pregnancy, for which my entire family is ecstatic! She will be finding out the gender, but in all of our excitement, many family members wanted to go out and buy baby clothes as an early gift… only many of them found it’s extremely hard to find clothing that is truly gender neutral and actually somewhat cute (yellow ducks might be a tad overplayed). I scoured the internet for some adorable unisex clothes for our team green friends!
I would suggest mostly checking the boys’ section because most of the clothes for girls include ruffles, bows and pink, whereas for boys there are more neutral colors such as gray, black, white, blues, green and orange. In addition it’s easier to make boy clothing feminine by adding headbands, or flower sashes/belts, but you can’t usually make girls’ clothes masculine.
This piece is so versatile – there are so many great chambray pieces out there. I’ve dressed J in chambray a lot – he recently outgrew his shirt so I need to buy another one. Colored jeans are my favorite to pair it with, and for a girl I think bright leggings would be so fun!
chambray | sneakers | colored khakis | mint pants | headband
2. Cardigans
Nearly every baby brand sells cardigans that could pass for gender neutral. This one featured here is baby gap but I actually really love the H&M cardigans. Cardigans can be easily paired with dresses, feminine leggings/pants and ruffle tops and accented with headbands to keep it feminine. And with jeans, graphic tees, chinos or cords it’s easily a boyish look.
cardigan | chinos | loafers | dress | sandals
3. Leggings
Go for a neutral palette and patterns like gray, shapes, stripes dots, etc. To make it gender-specific, pair with a blouse for a girl or tee for a boy. I love checking Etsy for leggings, some of my favorite shops for baby leggings are Little Four, Newberry Park, Thief and Bandit and Salt City Emporium. Target sells $5 leggings and H&M’s legging selection is around the same price range. In addition check out this awesome DIY for leggings from Small Fry Blog.
leggings | tee | moccasins | blouse | headband
4. Plaid Shirts
shirt | jeans | knot hat | shoes| skirt | hat | leg warmers
5. Graphic Tees
Graphic tees are probably the easiest gender neutral item in my mind. There are so many options out there and they are growing increasingly popular. Most graphic tees that are neutral are found in the boys’ section, but there are often a few gems in girls’ departments as well. Lately a lot of Etsy sellers have picked up on the printed tee trend and I love all of the original options! The tee feature here below is from eleventyfive which has several other adorable prints, but also check out Zen Threads, Coup, and Printed Palette in addition to baby stores Zara, Gap and The Childrens Place.
tee | shoes | pants | shoes | leggings
6. Rompers
This particular romper from Boden is found in the baby girls’ section, and the only feminine touch I see is the small little blue bow on the pocket which could be easily removed for a boy! Otherwise the neutral stripes and blue work beautifully for either gender.
Many brands carry gender neutral one-piece rompers as both summer items and winter (sweater one-pieces or sleep n’ play style). I especially like Gap’s collection.
romper | flip flops | hat | sandals | sweater
7. Jeans
I have to admit I stole this awesome idea from Brandy @ Heart & Habit’s post here on Hellobee. Her daughter looks adorable in her brother’s out-grown jeans. I love her term “brother jeans” instead of boyfriend jeans.
My favorite skinny jeans for J are from Gap and Gap outlet, but I’ve had good success with The Children’s Place outlet as well. I chose to use Zara skinnies for this post because they look very neutral and are also cheaper than the gap jeans. They start at size 3-6 months and go up through 24-36 mos.
jeans | shoes | checked shirt | pullover | headbands | top | shoes | sweater
8. For those of us with babies already, we know that baby spends the majority of their first 2-3 months in sleep n’ plays since it’s easier for all of us and they’re not really going out much. This is a collection of several gender neutral sleepers I’ve come across.
1. Kate Quinn | 2. Babies R Us | 3. Old Navy | 4. Carters | 5. Sage Creek | 6. Winter Water Factory | 7. L’oved Baby | 8. Gap | 9. Kickee Pants | 10. Nohi | 11. Nohi
Were you team green? How did you approach buying clothes for your baby?

Ohhhh, I love this! We aren’t pregnant (trying!) but we have already decided we don’t want to find out the sex. So– this is such a great post for us, and to send out one day. Everything on here is super cute!!

We ahead a boy first (almost 4), and now we are having boy/girl twins this summer. We have gotten some cute pink/flowered girl clothes, and we are planning to mix the boy clothes into her wardrobe as well.

What a great post!!! We didn’t really buy anything pre-P, but I do tend to shop more gender neutral items that I can make “girly” through accessorizing!
We actually have that exact plaid shirt that I pair with pink skinnies (that fit more like boyfriend jeans) rolled up & sandals! And when it was still cold we got her a plain flannel one (2 sizes too big) that I rolled the sleeves, paired with black leggings, and put a headband around for a belted shirt dress!
I especially love cardi’s from the boys section & we also buy boy shoes occasionally for P! I just got her some grey soft soled booties/loafers that she can girl up with any skirt, dress, or girly leggings outfit!
Definitely a gender neutral house here!

Great ideas! I want to go buy some of these pieces right now for LO-in-my-belly but I think DH would take away my credit cards

These are FABULOUS ideas! It’s so hard to buy clothes ahead when you’re team green, especially since they don’t make even the ducky things in any sizes bigger than NB/0-3. This makes me think of neutral clothes differently for any future babies!

@runsyellowlites: I love the idea for the plaid shirts as a dress!
@MrsTiz: haha aw thanks! If I think of more I will be sharing them
@regberadaisy: I have no idea
@swedishfish: hahaha same here!
@rattles: yeah honestly I don’t know how team green-ers do it!! It would be hard! haha
@looch: thank you – what a nice compliment. Were you team green?

@Mrs. Pen: Yes, we were team green and there’s just not a lot of variety in the obviously neutral stuff, so we had a lot of repeats. I am for sure going to keep these finds in mind!

Fantastic post! We were team green and found it nearly impossible to find gender neutral clothes.

I was team green and we had nothing- not one stitch of clothing when she arrived. We had to “borrow” a shirt from the hospital for her. We still have far fewer clothes for her at 10 months than our friends who found out the sex.

Great round-up!!! I love all the Etsy leggings! But I can’t bear to spend so much on just one pair. Maybe when K’s a little older and will wear a pair for a whole year! Those boys pants with suspenders are just too freakin’ cute!

@Mrs. Pen: You did an AMAZING job putting all of this together! I’m so impressed! We were TG and had this post come out a year ago, LO probably would have had a much different wardrobe. Awesome job!

Great post! Other than the leggings- I can’t think of putting my little guy in a tshirt and leggings, they’re just too… Tight or something, I think it looks funny on him! But the rest of the ideas are awesome- great to keep in mind for recycling clothing for baby #2 if it happens to be an opposite sex!

@Pink Champagne: haha for real?! I put my boy in leggings all the time! I love them on little boys. Maybe I’ll share some of my favorite inspiration pics for you
@Ree723: thank you!!
@shopaholic: oh I agree there… Someone gifted me the fox leggings by little four and I love them! I would definitely get those nicer leggings closer to 12-18 months. That’s why I included that target and h&m sell leggings for $5. I’ve seen a lot of people hand paint those leggings to make them more fun too
@tororojo: thank you!!
@luckypenny: tell him you’ll be team green if you can buy all these items haha!

Love the plaid shirt from The Childrens Place! So fantastic to see more brands doing more when it comes to gender neutral styles and colours. About time in my opinion. Pink and purple is def not just for girls anymore. Kate
